Are you lonely? This week is Loneliness Awareness Week. A chance to highlight the need for human connection. Loneliness is a space where the fear, sadness and overwhelm can expand. It is still possible to feel fear, sadness or overwhelm with others. But there's also the chance that a conversation and connection with the right person or people can lead to hope, problem solving, laughter, serendipity, surprise, and a feeling that change is possible. 🌱 For the past few years I've been involved in running a group who gather about once a month to do some greening activities in our community. I do things like write emails and Facebook posts, organise tasks and buy resources. Activities that can be a little mundane. And then we come together for a few hours, chat, work, see the changes. And afterwards it's like I've taken a big dose of hope medicine. Seeing the connections of people in the group, and that the impact is more than just the plants which are now growing and the wildlife the children are noticing. It's good to know that I'm not alone in my hopes for a more nature rich world. So this weekend and in the coming weeks where can you seek or create opportunities for connections which will help you? 💚 https://lnkd.in/en9Q5wZh #lonelinessawarenessweek #conservation #lonely #connection #randomactofconnection

Loneliness Awareness Week: Exploring the Link Between Loneliness and Perception of Anti-Social Behaviour This week is Loneliness Awareness Week, and it’s got us thinking here at Green & Burton ASB HQ… How much could loneliness play as a factor in the propensity to perceive behaviour as ASB? Loneliness is a growing concern in our society, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s a state of mind that can lead to various emotional and psychological challenges. When individuals feel isolated, they may be more sensitive to their surroundings and the actions of others. The Impact of Loneliness on Perception Loneliness can heighten our awareness of the world around us, sometimes in negative ways. When people are isolated, they may experience heightened anxiety and stress. This heightened emotional state can make them more susceptible to perceiving certain behaviours as threatening or bothersome, even if those behaviours might be considered normal or benign by others. The Connection to Anti-Social Behaviour Anti-social behaviour encompasses such a wide range of activities that can disrupt the quality of life in communities... These behaviours are however ultimately subjective, varying greatly depending on individual perspectives and tolerances. For someone experiencing loneliness, the threshold for what is considered anti-social might be lower. A noisy neighbour, a group of teenagers hanging out, or even the sound of a car alarm might be perceived more negatively by someone who is feeling isolated and disconnected from their community. Understanding the Context It’s crucial for those of us working in the field of ASB to consider the broader context of complaints and reports. Understanding the underlying factors, such as loneliness, can help us address issues more empathetically and effectively. By acknowledging the role of loneliness, we can better tailor our responses and support services to meet the needs of those who may be particularly vulnerable. As we observe Loneliness Awareness Week, it’s an opportunity to reflect on the invisible challenges that many individuals face. By understanding and addressing loneliness, we can create safer, more connected communities where everyone feels valued and heard. How does your organisation recognise and deal with loneliness?

We hosted our second Self-Care Sunday yesterday, and it was so wonderful to connect with our community who were joining from three different continents 🌍 Each Sunday we spend an hour together, with guided meditation, journaling, a self-care activity and a sharing circle. To close our Self-Care Sundays, we read a story aloud. Yesterday's story was a reminder that doing your best is good enough, and every tiny action adds up. 📚 The Hummingbird and the Forest Fire One day, a terrible fire broke out in a forest - a huge, roaring blaze that threatened to destroy everything in its path. All the animals gathered at the edge of the forest, feeling helpless as they watched their home being consumed by flames. The fire was too big, and they felt there was nothing they could do. Suddenly, a tiny hummingbird flew back and forth from the river to the fire, carrying a few drops of water in its beak each time. The other animals watched, confused and surprised by the little bird’s actions. "Little Hummingbird, what do you think you’re doing?" asked a large, concerned elephant. "The fire is far too big, and you’re far too small to make any difference!" The hummingbird paused for a moment, then turned to the elephant and said, "I’m doing the best I can." With that, the hummingbird continued flying back and forth, carrying tiny drops of water to the flames. Reflection Questions: 🌳What does this story suggest about the importance of individual efforts, even when the challenges seem insurmountable? 🌳In what ways can you be like the hummingbird in your work, volunteering or activism? 🌳How can a small but determined effort inspire others around you? Would you like an hour in your week to rest? To reflect on how you're really feeling? To spend 60 minutes away from your phone? Join us each Sunday. Come and look after your wellbeing with us. 🎟 https://lnkd.in/dkMxDB5m #thejoyfulactivists #charitywellbeing #humanitarianmentalhealth

Hi! I like your fancy nails! Did you know this is National Loneliness Awareness Week? I didn’t, until yesterday. There’s an irony in that. We hear about the loneliness epidemic, but it can be hard to see. That’s because loneliness is an emotion, a feeling – not the physical state of being alone (although that can be a contributor). Loneliness is rooted in human connection, or rather the lack of it. You can feel lonely working at home, at a party or in an office with dozens of colleagues around you. My worst feelings of loneliness have been when I’m with other people. It’s born from not feeling understood or appreciated (which is at the core of what loneliness is). It’s feels like no one hears or sees you. Or if they do – they only see you as they want to – not as who you are. If you’re honest with yourself, you’ve felt it at some point. It can even make you confused about who you are. You hope someone will reach out, turn toward or say something to you, ask if you’re okay, but often people don’t, because they don’t have the awareness or emotional capacity at the time. Like most hard things, the worse it gets the more challenging it is to reach out for help. The connection is lost. I think many of us think that social connection means some big grand gesture. In truth, it can be as simple as a quick hello or wave, or telling someone you like their nails. Everyone is different, but research shows that simple acknowledgement is all it can take to make a positive impact. A simple “hi” or wave is a gift that you can give others that will make you both feel good. As someone who is a workplace of one, walking has been my daily vitamin in the fight against loneliness. I walk multiple times a day and often it’s the only time I see or talk to other people. I say “hi” and smile at anyone I pass. It was work at first. I had to break the training we seem to get to look down or straight ahead and mind our own business. Now it’s easy – a quick smile, a head nod, a “hi there”… that’s all – no expectation of conversation. I see them, and I can tell they saw and heard me. Often people do start talking to me (being Canadian – the weather typically is the opener). Now I see the same people repeatedly and feel like the mayor of my neighbourhood. We don’t know each other’s names – but we nod or smile or say “hi” in familiar recognition. Give those little moments of appreciation to people around you and accept them when they are returned to you. It can be the smallest moment that brings you or someone else that little connection that keeps loneliness from taking root. Read more at the link below. Another great organization to look into is GenWell. Peter and his team are doing great things. And…even if it’s just one person each day – say “hi” or send a quick “Hey, thinking of you.” It could be doing as much for you as the other person. https://lnkd.in/gpkgR2Yj #GenWell #reachout #connection #curiousity #community #

This Movember, I want to acknowledge and celebrate the men who have reached out to tap with me. From managing burnout and overwhelm to processing trauma, working through significant physical challenges like pain and illness, and navigating emotional struggles like grief, anger, and shame—these aren’t just ‘men’s issues’ or ‘women’s issues’; they’re human challenges we all face. I’m grateful for their openness, their willingness to try something new, and their courage to connect rather than stay silent. It’s inspiring to see more men benefit from the relief and resilience that EFT Tapping can provide as part of their journey. If you're feeling weighed down by stress, tapping can be an effective way to regain balance and find a sense of ease. 💙 #Movember #MentalHealth #EFTTapping #MensWellness #Resilience #YouAreNotAlone Learn more about Movember
