Understanding the difference is crucial for financial professionals in tailoring services and communication strategies, for entrepreneurs in targeting the right type of investors, and for wealth management firms in curating offerings. • Principal Investors - individuals or firms who invest their own capital directly into businesses or assets. They are actively involved in making strategic investment decisions by taking board seats or advisory roles in the companies they invest in. The objective is to allocate their capital to areas with growth potential. They often focus on specific industries where they have expertise. • Family Offices - private entities established by and for wealthy families to manage their wealth, investments, and legacy. They provide a comprehensive approach to wealth management, which includes investment strategy, tax planning, estate planning, philanthropy, succession planning, and lifestyle management. The main objective is to preserve and grow wealth for future generations while considering the immediate and long-term needs of the family. FOs are structured as single-family offices (SFOs) or multi-family offices (MFOs). • HNWIs - individuals with a significant amount of personal wealth, usually defined as those with investable assets of $1 million or more. They often work with wealth managers, investment advisors, or family offices to manage and grow their wealth. The main goal is to protect and increase their wealth, often with a focus on maintaining their lifestyle. Commonalities • Risk Management: preserving, protecting, and growing their wealth • Priority: privacy, control, and taking a personalized approach to managing assets. • Network Utilization: Leverage connections for investment opportunities and due diligence. Key Differences: • Scale of Operations: FOs offer comprehensive services, while principal investors focus on direct investments, and HNWIs use standardized wealth management solutions. • Investment Approach: Principal investors tend to be more actively involved in their investments compared to typical HNWIs and FOs. The distinctions between the three can become blur. Some HNWIs may act as principal investors, while principal investors might establish family offices as their wealth grows and they age. Having worked for and with the three, I have witnessed certain HNWIs acting as principal investors and establishing family offices as their wealth increases. ________________________ Through Ascendi Capital, I partner with accredited investors (retail & institutional) who are looking to preserve, protect, and grow their wealth through real assets investments.
