This week, the Maritime Decarbonization Conference is taking place in Europe, offering a great opportunity to learn about the imminent transformations our ships need. A wide range of alternative fuels will be presented. Most of these have different strong and weak points to take into account, regarding range, power, future-proofness and possible refits, so how to know what is the best fuel substitute for a specific vessel? One promising solution is to use digital twins of your ship, where you will be able to virtually test different solutions before bringing them into practice. Capturing the right data is key to unlocking this solution, knowing your power fluctuations, fuel flows, propeller behaviour and the general behaviour of your ship in off-trial conditions will allow you to make better decisions with regards to which alternative power generator is best for your ship. Next to that, many of the promising alternatives require hybrid solutions. For hybrid solutions to work optimally, one has to know the requested and delivered power from each system with a high granularity, only then control systems with a good understanding of your specific ship's needs can be developed. To build this personalized understanding of your fleet, request a demo on our website to capture the right data. With this information in hand, you can confidently explore new fuel options and determine the best solution for achieving low-carbon and zero-emission shipping, this week, in Amsterdam. https://lnkd.in/dEM6hVa5

In recent weeks, there have been several key announcements and partnerships that highlight the industry's focus on sustainability and innovation. The primary goal of ocean insights technology is to simplify and derisk maritime operations. This is a critical consideration as the industry continues to evolve and respond to the challenges of climate change. In this context, the adoption of cleaner energy solutions is becoming increasingly important. A recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) emphasizes the need to address climate change by promoting the adoption of cleaner energy solutions in the maritime industry. In line with this focus on sustainability, maritime technology company Spinergie has announced a strategic partnership with Veracity, the leading maritime emissions data cloud. This partnership highlights the industry's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and demonstrates the potential for innovative technologies to drive positive change. In addition to these developments, there have been significant advancements in maritime research and development. For example, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and partners have successfully demonstrated an innovative solution as part of an EU-funded project. This project showcases the potential for collaborative research and development to drive innovation in the maritime sector. While these developments are positive, it's also important to acknowledge the challenges that the industry continues to face. From the impact of climate change to the need for more sustainable practices, there are many complex issues that require attention and action. Key Takeaways: • The adoption of cleaner energy solutions is critical to addressing climate change in the maritime industry. • Innovative technologies, such as ocean insights technology, have the potential to simplify and derisk maritime operations. • Strategic partnerships, such as the one between Spinergie and Veracity, can drive positive change and promote sustainability in the industry. • Collaborative research and development can lead to innovative solutions and advancements in the maritime sector. As we move forward, it's essential to stay informed about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. By working together and embracing innovation and sustainability, we can build a more resilient and environmentally conscious maritime industry. #MaritimeIndustry #Sustainability #Innovation #OceanInsightsTechnology #CleanerEnergySolutions #MaritimeEmissions #ResearchAndDevelopment #CollaborativePartnerships #MaritimeTechnology #EnvironmentalFootprint

Shipping and aviation are two of the largest contributors to global emissions from transport, yet decarbonising both at the same time is going to prove increasingly tricky. Both industries are increasingly entrenched in practises which prevent them from modespite pressure from government and industry players, according to research from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology The new paper by Professor Frauke Urban and her team calls this 'carbon lock-in.' This is only exacerbated by a lack of renewable fuels across both marine and aviation, meaning goals of cutting emissions by 2030 may not be reached without systemic change. It's a critical time for climate decisions in Brussels. With the European Commission slated to come out with a Clean Industrial Deal in the first 100 days of its new mandate, it is more urgent than ever that policymakers strive harder to use real-time metrics that shed light on actual performance – and not bask in the warm glow of far-off targets. The 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 initiative aims to play its part in ensuring the future of European clean technology is both ambitious and achievable. The timely series of reports by Breakthrough Energy , Cleantech for Europe, and featuring analysis by Systemiq Ltd. sheds light on the current state of the clean industrial transition. 🔗 Find the link to the full report in the comments!

Extremely interactive discussions between ERA members and speakers at our Environmental and Social Group meeting today in Brussels. As well as updates from the ERA team on our environmental activities, with a look ahead to the upcoming mandate and the association's asks in terms of policy in the coming months, we were pleased to welcome Flor DIAZ PULIDO, Head of Unit Aviation Policy, DG MOVE, European Commission and Juan Montero, Director, Florence School of Regulation for some positive exchanges on the Green Deal. Discussions covered the energy transition and how the EU's industrial and energy independence will be a priority for the next five years, investment in SAF, modal shift, demand caps, slot regulation and maintaining island connectivity to mainland Europe and beyond via hub airports. There was a consensus that the issue is not aviation growth itself, but growth in emissions that is the issue and that new technology will help resolve this conundrum. We also had an update from Dimitar Nikov, Senior Policy Officer, DG CLIMA, European Commission about the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system for non-CO2 effects, on which there has been significant recent research. Maxime Meijers of new ERA member Estuaire complemented with an overview of their software platform for monitoring CO2 and non-CO2 emissions. Some fascinating observations on how targeting certain contrail-prone flights with higher levels of SAF can have a much greater impact on reducing non-CO2 effects. Thank you to all our speakers and members for their participation and we look forward to tomorrow's discussions.
