For the first time in 50 years, Semicon West, a leading microelectronics conference, is relocating to Phoenix, Arizona, next year. This moves underscores Phoenix's emergence as a semiconductor manufacturing hub. Arizona's semiconductor industry has deep roots, beginning with Motorola’s research lab in Phoenix in 1949. The momentum continued with ASM's arrival in 1976 and Intel's semiconductor factory opening in Chandler in 1980. The region's manufacturing ecosystem strengthened with these foundational players and their suppliers. The area saw significant growth recently, with 14 major manufacturing announcements in the past four years and topping the U.S. for manufacturing construction. In May 2020, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) committed $65 billion to build three fabs in Arizona, marking the state's largest foreign direct investment. Arizona's strong talent pipeline, bolstered by partnerships with institutions like Arizona State University and Maricopa Community Colleges, has been a major draw for semiconductor giants. These educational collaborations support workforce development and bridge the gap between technological innovation and practical application. The state’s strategic incentives, robust talent pool, and supportive educational initiatives have collectively positioned Arizona as a prime location for semiconductor manufacturing and innovation

The recent groundbreaking for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s (TSMC) €10 billion plant in eastern Germany is a turning point in Europe’s pursuit of technological sovereignty, but it’s also another reminder of the need for a “silicon-to-systems” strategy. The August 20 ceremony was attended by European leaders including EC President Ursula von der Leyen, who announced a €5 billion funding package to support the construction and operation of the new fab. As Kate Koger and I write in the IPC Blog, this is the company’s first European site, a milestone on the path to Europe’s goal to produce 20 percent of the world’s #semiconductors by 2030. But while semiconductors are critical, focusing solely on them neglects other key areas of the electronics ecosystem, like #PCB production, #EMS, and #advancedpackaging. For TSMC and other companies to be successful with European operations, the region needs to adopt a "silicon to systems" perspective that covers the entire lifecycle of electronics manufacturing beyond just the chip. https://lnkd.in/e-xzsX9k #silicontosystems

SIA Applauds Finalization of First CHIPS Award for Polar Semiconductor: https://lnkd.in/egDwfKmE The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) today released the following statement from SIA President and CEO John Neuffer applauding the first finalized agreement to allocate incentives under the CHIPS and Science Act. The agreement between Polar Semiconductor and the U.S. Department of Commerce will support the expansion of Polar’s chip production capabilities in Minnesota. The Commerce Department previously announced preliminary incentives agreements for a range of companies and projects that will help strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. As previously announced in May, the incentives related to this agreement will allow Polar to double its U.S. fabrication capacity of sensor and power chips within two years and serve diverse market segments. As part of the announcement, Polar Semiconductor is also transitioning to become a U.S. majority-owned commercial foundry. #semiconductor #manufacturing #technology #innovation #semiconductormanufacturing #chips

2024 MCU FABLESS COMPANIES Leading MCU designers such as Infineon Technologies, Renesas Electronics, and NXP Semiconductors remain closely competitive, with only minor differences between them. NXP continues to dominate the automotive MCU market. As the COVID-19 pandemic shifts into an endemic phase, MCU suppliers have been adjusting their global strategies. The competitive landscape has stayed relatively stable, with a growing number of smaller suppliers, particularly from Asia. Major Chinese OEMs have entered the semiconductor field, focusing strongly on MCU manufacturing. Their expansion is driven by increasing demand in areas like smart home ecosystems, the automotive industry, and the integration of AI across various applications. These companies are actively engaged in chip design to enhance supply chain control, and their in-house MCU development efforts are fostering greater self-reliance. Notable investments have bolstered the positions of these firms, with BYD Semiconductor, China’s top MCU manufacturer, standing as a prime example. #interesting #technology #innovation #semiconductor #microcontroller Texas Instruments Ambiq Microchip Technology Inc.
