Ok the study by Timothy Stacey on religious repertoires was not an easy read, but fascinating and offers a fresh perspective and with the Eastern holiday approaching, it aligns perfectly with the mindset of the season. According to the study, religious repertoires could be valuable tools for understanding behavioural and social change, especially in transitioning towards sustainability. Maybe we should turn away from the Com-B model, Behaviour Change Wheel and other models but look more into magic, myths, rituals and tradition to use as a tool for behaviour change. When considering how to improve the lives of wild animals, it's essential to know why people care about them. Instead of solely depending on scientific arguments about animal sentience, we can also look into religious beliefs that highlight the inherent value of all living beings, deserving of respect. These beliefs play a significant role in shaping our values and worldview. We can use these beliefs to demonstrate why every animal matters. Additionally, rituals can strengthen our connection to animals and nature. For instance, organizing special ceremonies dedicated to animals or nature, or establishing safe spaces for them, can instil a sense of responsibility for their well-being. Moreover, myths offer inspiring narratives that drive advocacy for animal welfare. Ancient legends, such as the tale of St. Francis of Assisi, who is said to have preached to animals and considered them his brothers and sisters, exemplify the deep bond between humans and animals. Such stories can motivate action in protecting wild animals. Recent research by Willem Sleegers at Rethink Priorities (published by Faunalytics) showed (a modest correlation) that individuals with idyllic beliefs about nature were more likely to express concern for wild animals and support interventions in nature. Pure scientific knowledge about nature and its state is maybe not a driver for all people. Let's continue learning and embracing diverse ideas to enhance the lives of animals and our planet. 🐕 I love dogs! For the upcoming International Dog Day, I was reflecting on the evolving role of animals in humans' lives. Animals are food, transportation and agriculture means, decoration at home, therapy "tool"... you name it, now become family members with rights and social security as well as a part of political processes in our countries.
