Profit isn't the only priority of sustainable forestry. It's the responsible use of forest resources while maintaining the ecosystem. Soil, water, and wildlife are all taken into account. Wildlife biologists help preserve biodiversity. They're just one of the unexpected careers in responsible forestry. "Too many deer." In the third of our Experts' Excerpts, Head of Forestry and Woodlands Keir Smith explains how, despite recent increased deer management across our sites, thermal drone surveys have shown that deer densities are up to ten times higher than that which would allow natural regeneration of native woodlands, including Temperate Atlantic Rainforest. Our Natural Capital Report, published this week, details the results of these surveys as part of comprehensive biodiversity monitoring and informs future land management actions, such as reducing deer densities across our estates, with a particular focus on the very high numbers of non-native sika deer. How does forest management affect wildlife, specifically birds? Which birds prefer which types of forest habitat? How can you help birds thrive on your property? The Forestry for the Birds Virtual Tour is a new tool developed by Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources and Purdue Extension, which offers answers to those questions and more in an easily digestible and visual format. The virtual tour is based on The Nature Conservancy’s Forestry for the Birds program. https://lnkd.in/eujQCGA3 #tree #arborist #ISA #isasouthern

The 2024 Carbon Friendly Forestry Conference kicks off tomorrow! Our own Jesce Walz, senior research lead, will present "Sustainable Mass Timber: Forestry & Fabrication to Data-Driven Design," alongside leading experts in carbon reduction and forestry ecology. As the climate crisis intensifies, we must find new ways forward in forest stewardship. This presentation will explore the lifecycle of mass timber through an integrated approach of responsible forestry, innovative manufacturing, and data-driven design. If you're in the Seattle area, don't miss it! Washington Conservation Action #sustainabledesign #masstimber #communityresilience

🌍🗺️ Day 12 of the #30DayMapChallenge – Theme: Time and Space! This map highlights the changes in land use in the Gauteng Province over the past six years. Using the South African National Landcover data from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), I visualized these shifts to emphasize the importance of sustainable planning and conservation in rapidly evolving spaces. #GIS #mapping #datavisualization #geospatial #landuse #landusecover #landcover #30DayMapChallenge2024

If you are not a member of TOGETHER Bay Area and you care about #SFBayArea #OpenSpace and how we are responding to climate change as a region I highly recommend joining with like minded folks. Interesting discussions about #slowingdowntospeedup. And advice to #moveatthespeedoftrust
We had a great time meeting so many new folks at the TOGETHER Bay Area conference on Wednesday. Thanks for stopping by our booth to learn about how we're working hard to help #EndCatastrophicWildfire in California by reducing the cost and carbon footprint of landscape scale hazardous fuels reduction and forest health projects. #biochar #SlashAttack #sustainableforestry California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) East Bay Regional Park District California State Coastal Conservancy Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority Save the Redwoods League WRA, Inc. Good day all; Seeing that it is the week for alien invasive species according to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), thought will do a series on Alien invasive plants. In the attached PDF file, we highlighted the definition of Alien invasive species, why they where imported in the first place, why these species become invasive, & why they must be controlled. Just one, brief example is that Every year alien invasive plants use an estimate of 1.44 billion M3 of portable water in RSA. To put this into perspective, this water is enough to provide 3.38 million households with four inhabitants water for a year or is enough to irrigate 120 000 hectares of crop & pasture land. Alien invasive plants use substantially more water than our native plants species & with the majority of the RSA being a semi-Arid & Arid region, this has major impacts on the ground water recharge rates & the viability of agricultural & wildlife systems that require this water to function & produce optimally & sustainably. We will later discuss the legal requirements with regards to AIS, the five methods to control them, budgeting & integrated planning. Stay tuned for more information on why & how restore the balance in our natural ecosystems. Kind Regards #alieninvasivespecies #integratedcontrol #veldmanagement #landmanagement #rehabilitation

The latest issue of Cityvision magazine examines how Washington cities including Bellingham, Port Townsend, and Ritzville are expanding their tree canopies with community-centered urban forestry projects funded by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. As these cities develop and carry out unique forestry initiatives, each contributes to broader state and federal climate goals while creating positive health and social benefits tailored to local residents. https://lnkd.in/gzFce4S4 #CityvisionMag
