A rose vial that includes a message from President and CEO Stephen Reintjes Sr., MD, will adorn the Donate Life float in the Rose Parade tomorrow morning in Pasadena. Dr. Reintjes’ rose will be one of thousands on the Donate Life Rose Parade float honoring donors, recipients and others touched by organ and tissue donation. The Donate Life float, called Woven Together: the Dance of Life, honors organ, eye and tissue transplant recipients and donors. The float represents a collaborative national effort by 50 organizations, including the local Midwest Transplant Network, to reach people with the simple, life-giving message that organ, eye and tissue donations save lives. As of Nov. 14, NKCH had nine organ donor heroes with 27 organs transplanted including kidneys being the most donated at nine, followed by: liver (eight), heart (five), lungs (four) and intestines (one). There were 53 tissue and cornea hero donors with up to 5,300 lives improved through the donations.

Doctors always prioritize saving your life, and organ donation is only considered after all life-saving efforts have been exhausted. Two doctors not involved in transplantation must declare death before organ donation can proceed. Let‘s spread the truth and encourage more people to register as donors. 1 in 4 people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. It’s a powerful reminder of how crucial blood donations are to our healthcare system. Every day, 5,000 blood donations are needed in the UK to support patients undergoing surgeries, receiving cancer treatments, or dealing with emergencies. Around 30% of all blood donations go to people battling cancer, while the rest support those in need of urgent medical care. Recently, I donated blood, and it was a reminder of just how easy and impactful this act can be. By taking 30 minutes of my time, I had the chance to help others in ways that can truly save lives. Blood can’t be manufactured—it can only come from generous donors. Without it, our healthcare system would face severe challenges. If you’ve ever thought about donating, here’s what you need to know: 🩸You must be 17 to 66 years old (or over 70 if you’ve donated in the past two years). 🩸You need to weigh at least 50 kg. 🩸Make sure you feel healthy and well on the day of your donation. 🩸Recent travel, tattoos, or illness may require a short waiting period. A single blood donation can save up to three lives, and with blood only lasting 35 days (for red blood cells), regular donations are essential. It’s a small commitment that makes a big difference. #GiveBlood #SaveLives #Healthcare #BloodDonation #NHS
