I was honored to help raise money for the Marine Raider Foundation by running the Semper Five 5K this past weekend. I’ve been criticized by some who say I shouldn’t be sharing posts about my family, military service, and community service on LinkedIn because those topics aren’t business-related. I don’t mind the criticism, but I disagree and I’ll explain why. Business leaders are people, not AI-powered robots. All things being equal when it comes to results and performance, people prefer to do business with other people who share their common values; people they can respect, trust, and even admire. At Hiring Our Heroes, under the leadership of Eric Eversole we have been committed to fostering strong connections between military communities and local economies to address the unique challenges of transitioning service members and military spouses. Recently, Eric Eversole, Melissa Sanderson and Jenny Lynne Stroup headed to Louisiana in collaboration with local chambers, Bossier Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce and The Boot to identify solutions through chamber members coupled with national support. Each year, Louisiana experiences an average economic loss of $1.2 billion due to transitioning service members leaving the state. However, “The Boot” is determined to turn this loss into growth by providing service members with access to Louisiana’s economy, employers, and communities. Top discussions always include pathways to economic opportunity for military spouses, which is a key factor in retaining service members in the area.
