Grapes and tangerines are among healthy foods being grown in the grounds of an Irvine primary school. Children and staff at Elderbank Primary have teamed up with parent Yousif Al Ahmed to create a garden inside a polytunnel. The growing area was created a few years ago through the Pupil Equity Fund and it has gone from strength to strength. Councillor Shaun Macaulay, Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, said: "I think many people will be surprised that things like grapes and tangerines can thrive in our climate! This project shows what can be achieved when people of all ages - and from all walks of life - work together." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e3z42nPi

Recently, proceeds generated from the Copper River companies enabled the Native Village of Eyak (NVE) to provide funds to the Cordova School District to ensure the district will be able to maintain its extracurricular activities and free lunches for the next school year. The school district’s budget was cut significantly putting extracurricular activities, free lunches, and teacher staffing at risk. Thanks to the funds from NVE, the school district will be able to overcome a significant portion of the budget deficit to support these programs. It is the shared mission of the Copper River Family of Companies to diversify the NVE’s ability to facilitate economic advancement. The income generated from our companies helps the NVE fund health and social services, economic development, natural resource/environmental education, jobs, job training, and other benefits to the NVE in a manner that is consistent with Alaskan Native cultural values and traditions. As we head into the week, let's have some reflection on what we are grateful for. After reading this story from #KRDA , I'm grateful for the privilege of safety 🌟 Meet John, a resilient 13-year-old from Kibera who balances school, his own ambitions, and helping his family 💙 Picture this: a busy day of lessons, training, new friends and new experiences in Grade 7 at school. It's 4:30 pm and time to go home. You then board the bus back to the Kibera slums; your home. As the other kids head home to do chores and homework, you find your mother having prepared groundnuts to go sell in the busy and dangerous night time highways of Nairobi to supplement the family's income, leaving no time to rest, complete your homework, or enjoy the simplicities of childhood. 🌃 This is John's reality. Navigating these overpopulated, dangerous roads is a part of his daily routine. Pedestrians account for 64.5% of all traffic fatalities, translating to an estimated 320 pedestrians dying annually. The greatest danger to a pedestrian’s life in Nairobi is a private car. To help John KRDA has faced up to these challenges and created the Homework Hub in #ACKGoodSamaritanSchool. This has generated a safe space where he can finish his assignments before facing the hazards of the night. Now, his grades are rising, and he never misses an assignment. 📚 While we can't solve all the issues and dangers of the world, we can create these safe spaces and allow opportunities of education to reduce the impacts of systematic poverty. With your support, The Atlas Foundation can continue to help children like John by funding projects at #KRDA and reducing the impacts of poverty and the need for John to support his family in this way. 💙🌃 #Resilience #EducationMatters #CommunityDevelopment #PovertyReduction #SupportEducation #TheAtlasFoundation #KRDA *John's name has been changed

🌍 In the face of a decadelong drought and its consequential economic strains, many families in Nyeri, #Kenya, find themselves unable to afford the essential education their children deserve. It's a heartbreaking reality where admission to high school becomes a bittersweet victory, overshadowed by the financial hardships that make it inaccessible to talented young people. 📚 That’s one of the reasons Florida Gulf Coast University College of Education professor Ndiangui, Dr. Peter Ndiang'ui created the Nyeri Diaspora Leadership Academy. Through donations by Southwest Florida non-profits and individuals, more than 30 #Nyeri children have had their school fees paid for in 2023-24. 🍃 I’m thankful I got to talk to Peter about the work he’s doing, and how he's involving Florida Gulf Coast University students from his #Colloquium classes. ✨ But what struck me most about Peter's story is his sense of purpose and gratitude. In his own words, "You say, ‘you have helped all these kids’ but I think I’m helping myself. It’s me. It is something so nice to be on that side, to be able to give." 💗 As we navigate our own professional journeys, let's take a page from Peter's playbook to channel our resources, networks and expertise towards causes that matter. Peter is creating a world where every young #Kenyan has the opportunity to learn. We can do that, too, by supporting the NDLA and causes like it. 🖋 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eHgUgUb5 #EducationForAll #Leadership #Impact

This week marks the 22nd Anti-Poverty Week in Australia. More than three million Australians, including one in six children, are currently living in poverty. This is devastating. We know the impact poverty can have on children’s social, emotional and educational development. This is especially important in the early years when a child’s brain is developing faster than at any other time and their need for a safe place to live, nutritious food and loving caregivers is of most importance. At SVA, we are committed to tackling the root causes of poverty. Our Early Years team is working to transforming the early childhood landscape to ensure every child has the best start in life. https://lnkd.in/gaYegZbs Join us this Anti-Poverty Week in taking a stand and advocating for real change. Together, we can work towards a future where no child in Australia grows up in poverty. #AntiPovertyWeek #EndChildPoverty #SVA #ValuingChildren #AdvocacyForChange
