The draft New Aged Care Act still has room for improvement according to Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF). Of particular concern is the ability to source, train and upskill the unregulated workforce. We will continue to watch this space with interest. https://buff.ly/402C6cZ #AgedCare #Recruitment #HomeCare

The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care has released of the Nursing and Midwifery 2023 National Health Workforce Dataset (NHWDS). Some quick figures I found interesting: - there are 326,838 RNs employed in nursing. 292,509 of these are in clinical roles. - 78% obtained their qualification in Australia; 55% born in Australia - 87% are female (very small improvement from 88% the year before) - 74% work in metro locations - 1.16% are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander nurses (a slight drop from 1.48% in 2022) - The average age is 42 You can interact with the data here: https://lnkd.in/g5GDY9pU

The #scopeofpractice review offers an opportunity to improve health outcomes and equitable access to care for all Australians by maximizing the potential of all health workforces in primary care. For #midwifery this means midwifery #continuityofcare with a known midwife as already evidenced by the most recent Cochrane review and #birthingoncountry and is a key recommendation of the NSW birth trauma inquiry. It is time to be bold. Australians deserve better. Women deserve better. It’s time to prioritize evidence based best practice multi-disciplinary care. The #scopeofpractice review will be a game changer. Midwives and nurses are qualified and ready to work to full scope. I had the privilege of collating the combined response from a number of the peak nursing and midwifery bodies in relation to the Scope of Practice Issues Paper 2. I believe they have made a powerful and compelling argument

A very good read! A joint response from nursing and midwifery peaks on the scope of practice review🌟 I went straight into practice nursing extended hours, multi-disciplinary environment in NZ in 1997. 27 years ago 🤨 Practice Nursing was a revered nursing role. We had more nurses than doctors (in fact every practice I’ve worked in has), working in partnership with GPs, physiotherapists, counsellers, midwives, and pharmacists. I had the choice of an hourly rate, or 50% of what I brought into the practice (whichever was more). We leaned on and learnt from each other. It’s a very satisfying space to work in where every healthcare provider was valued and added value… and yes, GPs were still busy, yes people had more choice, and yes, it made healthcare more accessible. I would love nothing more than to see this partnership in Australia 🌟 We can do this Australian Government 🙏 We have to do this🙌 #modernisingprimaryhealthcare #healthcarepartners #accessiblehealthcare #personcentred

There should also be consideration for the other ways undergraduate nursing students acquire nursing experience and how that can be credited towards placement. This could include work as an Assistant in Nursing, USiN, Enrolled Nurse or volunteering with organisations such as St John Ambulance. Also many hospitals expect students to complete 40 hrs a week in 8 hour shifts. This expectation is not placed on most grads, and contracts are generally arranged to provide 3 days off a week. Why do we expect students to do more hours than a graduate nurse. The current system is filled with logical fallacies and it unfairly burdens those who are making career changes or are returning to study later in life. Universities cannot expect students to place their lives on hold at their behest, and such notions are pretentious and out of touch. Students of today will be practitioners of tomorrow. As we face a workforce crisis across nursing (and other health fields at that), should we not find ways to support them? The current model is demeaning to students and devalues them as the future generation.
A growing number of undergraduate nursing and midwifery students nationwide are voicing concerns about the significant challenges posed by hundreds of hours of mandatory unpaid clinical placements. https://bit.ly/3J7V3RM

Talking about my work at the Research School, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Griffith University. Engagement of children and young people in participatory research brings deep meanings and makes the research process more vibrant and innovative. Although it is challenging, there is a beauty that lies beneath it. #griffithhealth #participatoryresearch #engagingchildreninresearch
