It's the Wednesday update! Today I'm at the #Hydrogen Innovation Showcase event in Manchester. The free event has been organised by Hydrogen Innovation Initiative, UK-HyRES: Hub for Research Challenges in Hydrogen and Alternative Liquid Fuels, HI-ACT and their various representatives in and around the Catapult network, including Energy Systems Catapult Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult Connected Places Catapult and others, with lots of interesting pitches last night from SMEs, including Anionix, of course, and several Universities. Sounds like a lot? 250 attendees from 175 organisations, so, yes, it is! Quite a few cool startups in attendance too, including Gravitricity Ltd Hydrologiq Wild Hydrogen HyWaves Dolphyn Hydrogen and established and growing supply chain companies including Compact Syngas Solutions Limited EQUANS Wessington Cryogenics Equilibrion plus utilities and associations with Wales & West Utilities highlighting the SW corridor and National Gas showing off their FutureGrid R&D project while Hydrogen Scotland (formerly SHFCA) wave the flag for industry 'north of the wall'. It's a full on day and a half event, with lots of panel sessions, and lots of great conversations about how we are building the world's toughest #electrolysers! As for tomorrow's election and Friday's results - watch out for the following: 1) Date of the King's speech, likely 17th July, and content of that relating to GB Energy and maybe also Green Hydrogen; 2) Delay of the Summer recess to get that stuff kicked off at high speed; 3) Coordinated efforts by everyone to bang the drum on #GreenHydrogen to the new government. As the 'sensitive period' ends (no longer known as 'purdah') an inevitable rush of delayed communications, announcements and grant activity will return! Good luck with all that. Lunch break imminent, so I'm scooting back to the stand.

Thanks to GRTgaz and Equinor for the side event to the 25th Assises Européennes de la Transition Energétique. It was nice to hear from Grete Tveit (Equinor Low Carbon Solutions President) and Sandrine MEUNIER (Directrice Générale GRTgaz) that the France/Norway project for CO2 CCS (pipeline and tie-in to CO2 Highway Europe, from Dunkirk harbor) is moving into the right direction. It was the opportunity for FDE to explain how our Cryo Pur solution can help to capture and purify any kind of CO2 emission to the most constraining CCS gas specification.

Great to hear East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward speaking passionately at the #Midlands Energy Summit being held today at #Toyota in Derby - highlighting the leading role that the East Midlands is playing in the UK's clean energy transition through collaboration, innovation and industry, and the opportunities of devolution, to drive economic growth and prosperity. The significance of the Midlands role in achieving energy security in the UK and the Government's clean energy superpower mission will be further highlighted by the forthcoming #Midlands Energy Security White Paper soon to be launched by the #Midlands Engine Partnership - developed by a senior Taskforce of industry, local government, academic and public sector leaders.

CCS is a key decarbonisation tool. On 10th December, three of the most hotly anticipated #CCUS FIDs of 2024 were announced in the space of just a few hours. In Denmark, INEOS, in partnership with Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden, has taken FID for the first phase of the Greensand CO2 transport and storage project. In the UK, Equinor, bp, and TotalEnergies has also announced FID for the Northern Endurance Partnership and NZT Power. Our carbon management and European power experts teamed up to film a short video powered by Lens, discussing the journeys these projects have taken, their economics and how they compare to other leading European hubs. SGN has completed the world's first 8.4km domestic hydrogen gas network in Levenmouth, Scotland, as part of their H100 Fife project. This groundbreaking initiative will use green hydrogen produced by a 7MW offshore wind turbine to heat homes and cook food, starting in 2025. #GreenHydrogen #RenewableEnergy #NetZero #EnergyTransition

The event, co-organised by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and the European Commission, builds on the successful work of the Clean Hydrogen JU. This involves the collaboration with the regions and cities including project development assistance and funding of already 15 hydrogen valleys across Europe. This groundwork sets the stage for the launch of an EU roadmap for Hydrogen Valleys and related facility. The agenda will include discussions with policy makers including local authorities as well as project developers, investors and industry suppliers looking at shaping up such local hydrogen ecosystems and thus implementing the strategic REPowerEU’s objective of doubling the number of Hydrogen Valleys in the European Union by 2025.
