During a 30-day public comment period, EM’s Hanford Field Office (HFO) hosted its annual Hanford Site 5-Year Plan public meeting this fall to engage the public about Hanford Site cleanup work to be completed or initiated during fiscal years 2025 to 2029. HFO representatives provided an overview of Hanford’s goals and objectives in major areas, including tank waste treatment, risk reduction and site infrastructure. Representatives with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Washington State Department of Ecology also shared their perspectives, followed by a Q&A session with meeting attendees. HFO will use feedback collected during the comment period to better understand the public’s project priorities as it develops future budget submissions! 👍

📣 Read all about it! 🗞 Several of our experts – from our Environmental Justice, Site Solutions, and Health Sciences practices – have co-authored an article in the Environmental Bankers Association Journal’s Summer issue. Elizabeth Sherwood Krol, PG, EP, MBA, CRE, Kun Zhao, Leo Rebele, Sofia Leotta, Alma (Cardenas) Feldpausch, Elizabeth Miesner The article, entitled Navigating the Complex Community Engagement Requirements as Part of Site Cleanups, presents the challenges often associated with brownfield cleanups through three case studies from Lynnwood, California. “Brownfield sites are frequently located in communities already burdened by environmental and socioeconomic factors such as poor air quality, high traffic impact, low household income, and high unemployment rates. These factors often overlap with high populations of people of color and communities that primarily speak languages other than English. Thus, the long-term success of any brownfield cleanup project often hinges on how the proponents of the projects approach environmental justice issues.” ➡ Read the full article (https://lnkd.in/ebUPxu7R starts on page 24) #EJ #proactiveEJ #brightminds #DEI #environmentaljustice #sitesolutions #healthsciences

Registration is Open for the 2024 Martz Symposium on Public Lands! Join Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources, Energy, and the Environment and Colorado Environmental Law Journal: The Future of Public Lands – People, Place, and Power Fri, Oct 4 and Sat, Oct 5 In person or virtual University of Colorado Law School Public lands across the United States provide us with clean water, energy and food production, world-class recreational opportunities, wildlife habitat, and many other important values. Indigenous peoples have deep ties to the land informed by their traditional ecological knowledge. And public lands drive economic opportunities and job creation for rural communities. For all these reasons, the American public broadly supports the protection and sustainable use of public lands, yet they are facing unprecedented threats from resource degradation, climate change, the demands of multiple uses, and challenges in agency funding levels. The 2024 Martz Symposium will take a deep dive into these rapid changes that are unfolding in real time and how they impact our relationship to the land. The Conference will consider the latest developments and proposed reforms to the laws and policies that govern our management of public lands, including a look at those laws that are standing in the way of progress and others that have helped to pave the way for innovation. And the Conference will convene a diverse and inclusive set of stakeholders, policymakers, academics, and advocates to share ideas on how best we can steward and care for America’s public lands for current and future generations. We have been invited to assist one of our local parks districts with preparing an Environmental Assessment that is needed for grant funding approval from the National Park Service. Scoping this project has involved reviewing this agency's NEPA process in detail to understand how land conversions are handled for state and local districts. Our next step is to clarify the level of public participation and finalize the proposal for submission. #EnvironmentalAssessment #GrantFunding #NEPA #PublicParticipation #NationalParkService
