As Outer values circular design their entire outdoor sofa sets are recyclable at the end of their use. The frame is made of aluminum, foams can be easily shred and repurposed as carpet padding and every plastic used falls into international recycling codes 2, 4, and 5. Metropolis Magazine has once again repeated several long-debunked fallacies about the safety and sustainability of PVC and vinyl. Allow us to do the fact-checking the editors should have done before this recent story went to print. 1. “...Every few years,” Metropolis claims, we are reminded “... of harmful ingredients in [vinyl flooring and wallpaper] that must be phased out ...” This is a veiled scare claim about phthalates, and it's been false for 5 decades, as we explain here: https://lnkd.in/d8wGtmm8. 2. Metropolis says we should “make the switch from extractive to regenerative materials,” but we're not sure why PVC should be excluded from any sensible definition of “regenerative” for several reasons. 3. More than 1 billion pounds of vinyl are recycled annually in the US and Canada at more than one hundred vinyl recycling centers. 4. Large quantities of pre-consumer vinyl are recycled every year. This valuable raw material is fed back into the production process, reducing the need for transportation and offsetting the use of virgin materials. 5. Finally, the long service life of many PVC and vinyl products (flooring and wallpaper included) dramatically reduces the amount of plastic in circulation. These are just some of the important facts the press regularly excludes from its coverage of PVC. Nominated: Wall light made from 45% recycled aluminium A vandal-resistant Dark Sky-certified wall light from Glamox with 45 per cent recycled aluminium has been nominated for a Build Back Better Awards 2024. The company says that the O21-W luminaire, aimed at commercial and public buildings, limits light pollution while supports a circular economy. The fitting is made to be disassembled so that parts may be replaced to prolong the luminaire’s life or reused or recycled at the end of life. It comes in a variety of lumen outputs, colour temperatures, sizes, and has a variety of sensor and control options.  The O21-W is made from diecast aluminium of which around 45 per cent is from recycled aluminium, and has a polycarbonate diffuser.  The luminaire can withstand up to 20 joules of impact – the equivalent of having a 5 kg ball dropped from a height of 40 cm – enough to withstand school playground knocks and ‘all but the most persistent vandal’, says Glamox. The dark sky variant has a warm colour temperature of 3000K and uses special optics to further restrict light spillage.
