I graduated from Harvard University with an Ed.M. On graduation day, 2 of my friends and I made a pact: we were going to come back in 3 years as MBA students. You see, we never felt good enough with "just" an Ed.M. Societally, we place so little importance on education vs. business that it's no surprise we planned to spend $120K we didn't have to close our own self-esteem gap. After all, the social hierarchy on campus reinforced it: The only thing considered less cool than being an Ed student was being a Divinity student. No wonder so many successful founders without an MBA face-off with that itsy, bitsy internal whisper that says... "you're not a 'real' business person because real business people have a degree they earned, they don't have to figure out things with real world experience." Even if WE ARE JUST AS SUCCESSFUL as MBAs. I've had this convo with numerous founders recently, i.e. that secret imposter syndrome of not being a business expert even if our IRL achievements say otherwise... Turns out, none of us returned for that business degree. 1️⃣ One became a prolific international author. 2️⃣ The other started & exited an award-winning social enterprise in the Middle East. 3️⃣ And you know what I did. Lesson learned: Yes, the degree often matters. But often seeking the right experience, and using THAT as your body of knowledge, can be just as relevant as a paper with a nice, three-letter acronym. (Somewhat inconvenient side-note: overcompensation may also be a factor to how some under-estimated founders often drive better business outcomes)

What do you say to someone who drops out of school to pursue his passion? For Qin En, it's definitely a "high five! After enrolling in Stanford University, Qin En decided to drop out after 6 months to start a company with his friends. The company - Glints - has now become one of the leading talent ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Now at 30, Qin En has chalked up more achievement and experience than many people his age. Not only did he subsequently return to Stanford to complete his education, he also led digital ventures with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and is now a partner with Saison Capital. He is also my instructor for a start-up program I am attending, and has given me valuable insights into the world of start-ups. We often say that career pathways are non-linear. So too are learning pathways. The need to complete formal education at the highest level before starting work is really a thing of the past. What is required is a flexible pathway where individuals can transition between learning and working over a lifetime. In this connection, the clarity we have of our values, passion and talent, plus the ability to take intelligent risks and experiment with different roles will go a long way in building an evergreen path to success in our career and life. I call this the #NextplayRevolution

Excited to share my top 10 tips for applying an entrepreneurial mindset to your higher ed career. I'd love to hear your feedback!
💡 "It's not enough to have big ideas about improving higher education; you need a thoughtful track record of innovation, outcomes, and impact. This comes from the practical application of learning, embracing the role of an 'intrapreneur'—someone courageous enough to apply new ideas, learn from failure, and co-create a bold vision for the future." – Janelle Elias, VP of Academic Affairs, Rio Salado College. 👏 Shoutout to AFIT community member Janelle Elias for her inspiring advice in CC Daily! This one is a must-read for anyone aspiring to become an innovative leader in higher ed. 🚀 #HigherEd #Leadership #Innovation #Intrapreneurship American Association of Community Colleges

Really looking forward to being back 'home' at Tangent, Trinity's Ideas Workspace lecturing on the Innovation and Enterprise Programme. Aimed at those who want to be job shapers and not seekers, Tangent’s part-time postgraduate certificate in Innovation & Enterprise Development (level 9) equips graduates with the creative confidence and skills required to translate ideas into innovative solutions. Students learn the fundamentals of idea development, creative problem-solving and innovation. They also learn how to recognise and communicate opportunities in a bid to introduce new and improved solutions in both new and established enterprises. The course focuses strongly on experiential and action-led learning, and is taught via a combination of masterclasses, interactive workshops and projects. Graduates learn how to develop their creative potential, critical and lateral thinking and an understanding of the societal and economic value that can be achieved by applying an innovative approach in enterprise. #innovation #creativity #entrepreneurship #strategy #marketing #learninganddevelopment
