We went on a mini college tour last week with our daughter, who's starting her senior year in high school in a few weeks. Four days, three different schools with the week book-ended with some fun. Our expectations were high for two of the schools, one of which was her top choice; the third one we went into not knowing what to expect. And guess what? That third school completely blew our minds. It was not even on her list a couple of months ago, but now it's her number one choice. One reason: their presentation and tour were unlike any other. They didn't follow the template that so many other schools do. There was no powerpoint and no rambling of statistics about GPAs and acceptance rates. There was no explanation of the different schools, majors, and minors. There was no in-depth discussion of how competitive it is. Instead, the intro session focused on why students choose to go there, what life is like there, and the opportunities available as a student and alum. Then, they divided us into small groups for the tour, which allowed us to easily talk to our guide, ask questions and understand what they like about the school. The entire visit was personal and welcoming, which allowed our daughter to envision herself there. And she liked what she saw. We've been on several college tours, and this one was the best by far. Though we have a few more in the future, it will be hard to beat. College admissions is a super competitive industry, and I've always wondered why most schools structure a visit the same way. That's why it was so refreshing to visit a school that strayed from the norm and did it their own way. So, the moral of this story is this: Just because everyone does something one way doesn't mean you have to. Be different and stand out, especially if it makes your audience's experience better.

Congratulations to all students who will be attending college in the fall! Whether it is a 4- or 2-year, private or public, small or large campus, college is truly a remarkable adventure! And, like most adventures, it comes with no small amount of anxiety. We want our students to develop the CONFIDENCE to navigate the opportunities and hurdles of their college experience, to be able to recognize, understand, and embrace all the learning that is available to them. This requires INFORMATION about how stuff works so that students are PREPARED for the inevitable ups and downs and curveballs, and they have reasonable EXPECTATIONS for themselves.  If you have a student – or are a student yourself -- who is a rising first year undergraduate, consider investing in The Confident Undergrad College Prep Series this summer. For an hour during each of four weeks, I’ll share a wide range of information about: 🏫 courses and professors, including the importance of syllabi and how to communicate with instructors;  🏫 managing time to reduce some of the stress of academic work and to create room for extracurricular activities and leisure time;  🏫 campus support resources, among them academic, psychological, basic needs, and career; 🏫 rules and procedures that are relevant to their success. Research finds students who earn college credit while in high school are more likely to enroll in college, stay enrolled in college until they graduate, and complete a credential or degree on time or early. Offering free summer courses is part of Ivy Tech’s commitment to increasing college going rates of young adults in Indiana. Last year, more than 4,000 high schoolers enrolled in free courses across the state. Indiana ranks first in the nation for students who are earning college credit in high school thanks to Ivy Tech. Finalize Your College List: Research colleges and make sure you have a mix of reach, match, and safety schools. Visit college websites, take virtual tours, and attend any remaining college fairs. 2. Organize Application Materials: Gather transcripts, recommendation letters, and any other required documents. Make a timeline for application deadlines. 3. Finish Your College Essay: Brainstorm and draft your college essay. Then, seek feedback from your teacher, family, or friends and refine it. 4. Take ACT/SAT Tests: If you haven't already taken an ACT or SAT, do so. Use prep materials and consider a prep course if you need extra help. 5. Start Scholarship Search: Look for scholarships and grants you may qualify for. Prepare necessary materials like essays and recommendation letters. 6. Plan Fall Campus Visits: Schedule campus visits for the fall. Make travel arrangements and plan your itinerary. Students can struggle with basic study skills, superficially passing over material in an effort to finish assigned tasks and check them off, but not really understanding or retaining what they are learning. In this eight-week course, we'll look at critical study skills every student needs, including how to make friends with your textbook, decipher graphical information, memorize important facts, and manage time for both short term and long term projects. We'll also talk about the importance of concentration and contemplation in mastering complex material. Students will complete short weekly exercises to demonstrate and practical close reading, outlining, interpreting data, memorizing facts, and organizing long projects. Special Offer: Because our teachers benefit when students have good study skills, all students completing this summer course will receive $50 credit toward one academic year 2024-2025 course they enroll in at Scholars Online. Credits may not be transferred.
