On October 13-14, the Career Service participated in the Conference on "𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴" in Athens with a focus on 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 through international internships, consulting projects, co-ops, community-engaged global learning, and other forms of globally-focused career preparation. Francesca Teresa Saracino spoke in an international panel about employment and career preparation in Italy and how Polimi prepares its students for their future professional life. Poland, the United States and Italy have 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀, but they all face 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 when it comes to managing employability, skills awareness, experiential learning and university-career transitions.  

In collaboration with our partner, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the FACT Centre, and the SEEC office conducted an informative session, serving as a platform for NU students to explore the Y-med internship program in Italy and its selection process. The discussion provided an introduction to the program, highlighting its objectives and alignment with fostering skills-based mobility partnerships in the Mediterranean region. Partnership details were discussed, outlining the roles of IOM, Nile University's FACT Centre, and the SEEC office in facilitating the internship and supporting participants. Selection criteria were detailed, covering academic qualifications, skills, experiences, and other relevant factors, emphasizing the importance of meeting eligibility requirements and demonstrating commitment. The session underscored the benefits of participation, emphasizing how the internship experience could enhance students' academic and professional growth. Benefits of hosting an IAESTE trainee? While the benefits of an international internship are obvious from the side of the intern, such an exchange also benefits the company in multiple ways. An IAESTE traineeship even goes a bit further: 1. Selection and promotion We pre-select the candidates we propose. In this process, we get help from the candidate's local IAESTE committee. These are the people who know the universities and programs the students are in and can best gauge whether their skills match your needs. 2. Flexible internship periods Short-term summer projects are popular, but other candidates are looking for an international experience as part of their degree or as an exchange semester. This last group is likely to accept a longer-term position of multiple months and can assist with larger or more complex projects. 3. Cost and support The cost allowance (which can be paid on a tax-exempt base) ensures our program has a competitive advantage over hiring a job student. The allowance is intended to cover lodging and other living costs of the intern while in Belgium. IAESTE helps them find suitable accommodation and can assist with visa or other administration. 4. Happy intern = happy company IAESTE helps interns get integrated in Belgian culture by meeting locals and exchanging experiences with their peers. We find this keeps students motivated and increases their overall wellbeing while on exchange, to the ultimate benefit of your company's projects. When I joined #CNRS in France for my PhD, it was my first time in Europe. I had colleagues from China and France, and my friends in the lab from countries like Mexico, Netherlands, Gabon, Thailand, Japan, Germany, and the Middle East. The best part of my PhD, beyond the academic and research work, was the cultural diversity I could explore. We often discuss a lot over coffee inside and outside our lab. We tried many amazing things together like, - Hiking in the Vosges mountain range on the German-French border. - Exploring the French countryside by walking. - Exploring fairytale towns in France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Germany. - Trying and cooking dishes from different countries and cultures. - Participating and attending the cultural events of the Lorraine region in France. Why am I discussing these here? I want to motivate students to seek out international internships and opportunities to study abroad. When I was an undergraduate student, there wasn't much awareness about such opportunities. I promise such an experience will profoundly impact your outlook on life and your career. It gives you a chance to see the world from different perspectives, build ever-lasting friendships, and create memories you'll cherish for a lifetime. #research #career #internship #student
