Set in the beautiful Söderåsen National Park, this event deepened our commitment to climate action in the very landscapes we strive to protect. Key moments from the summit included: 🌍 Reflecting on POW’s increasing influence in European climate advocacy, with insights from Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe and Ohana Public Affairs that sharpened our strategy. 🏔 Tackling diversity and inclusion through Opening Up The Outdoors workshops, broadening our impact on behalf of marginalised communities. 🎥 Previewing DOWNSTREAM, our upcoming film with icebreaker, anchoring POW’s 2025 Year of the Glacier campaign. 🗳 Celebrating collaborative campaigns like Oatly’s Voat! and POW’s Ride Bike Climb Vote! that mobilised outdoor communities to vote during the European elections. Next week the Immersed in Change event will be taking place in Costa Rica. 🇨🇷  This pre-conference to next year’s United Nations Ocean Conference is a High-Level Event on Ocean Action. “Grant Ennis's book Dark PR shows that whenever we focus on individual efforts to solve big problems, we suck the air out of collective action. More people should know that corporate emphasis on individual action takes actual energy away from collective organizing and action. Polluting industries love when people promote individual action. The idea of the carbon footprint was created and promulgated by an oil company. I ride an e-bike, am mostly vegetarian, have followed this stuff for 35 years – Dark PR is crucial. Ennis's point, backed by research, is that attention to individual actions REDUCES political organizing. Action is zero sum. What we really should be doing is organizing to build political power, to compel our governments to end fossil fuel subsidies (to start with), then use regulation & taxation to support all that other stuff.” - Liz Schiller https://lnkd.in/eHdedNk8

Last week, I had the pleasure of participating in the Special Issue Workshop "Local Authorities on Their Way to Climate Action" in Würzburg, Germany, where I also presented some insights gathered from Finland. The discussions centered on how smaller local authorities can address climate change and foster sustainable development. Some key takeaways: 💠 Smaller local authorities need to be creative and resourceful with funding to make things happen. Funding structures are not trivial. This is why the public financial management side of things is interesting. 💠 Small local authorities rely heavily on cross-jurisdictional and cross-sectoral collaboration and need strategies to effectively manage these partnerships. Research on knowledge co-creation and collaboration is essential, along with equipping professionals with appropriate skills for navigating more complex management landscapes. 💠 Progress tracking and monitoring is often limited to readily available data, yet local authorities may benefit from reaching out and collaborating with others to create more holistic view of their current state and impacts. 💠 Individual change-makers can play a crucial role in smaller organizations, bridging central administration and grassroots action. There is significant scope for research on the micro-foundations of institutional change. Thoughts? #SDGs #cities #climateaction

The two things have an obvious symbiotic relationship: the worse environmental destruction gets, the more precious nature seems and the louder people get. Recently, that has been the essential story of how the treatment of rivers by private water companies has become such a hot political issue. Thanks to that outrage and the endless effects of our heating climate, the notion of giving nature a set of legal rights is edging into political debate: in Lewes in East Sussex last year, for example, the district council passed a motion that opened the way for the River Ouse being granted rights – to flow, be free from pollution and sustain native biodiversity – based on the Universal Declaration of River Rights created via international cooperation in 2017. [....] today’s outlandish and unthinkable idea very often becomes tomorrow’s inevitability. A new kind of politics is brewing here. It is both radical and deeply rooted in our history, and already giving rise to set texts. Next week brings the publication of Wild Service, co-edited by Nick Hayes, who wrote The Book of Trespass, the 2020 travelogue that shone glaring light on the absurdities of land ownership. This new book brings together writers and activists who are all working towards “a new culture that returns nature to the centre of society”. Its title reflects the idea not only of serving the planet by protecting it, but the idea that in doing so, we honour something genuinely sacred.
