The next Federal election must be held in or before May 2025. Candidates from all sides of politics should be thinking about ways to help Western Sydney evolve into a more sophisticated region. For too long, Western Sydney has been seen as a convenient expanse for new housing and industrial estates. But we want to be more than just houses and warehouses. We’re excited by the positive responses we’re getting from MPs across the political spectrum who understand and support this. Groups like Western Sydney Tourism Taskforce NSW Inc. Sydney Tourism and Blue Mountains Tourism are working hard to swing the global spotlight onto the region. Western Sydney has the chance to become the world’s hottest (figuratively and realistically) new tourist destination. We have Australia’s first greenfield airport in 70 years opening in 2026 and a purpose-built tech city to accompany it at Bradfield. The government has a once-in-a-generation chance to get this right. So, what can they do to help? The Australian Government can support new, innovative development that will attract high spending visitors from around the world. Investing in new projects like Winter Sports World – a $500M+ international tourist attraction that will generate over $50 million a year in Federal Government revenue when it opens – would send a strong signal about government commitment to significant projects like ours in Western Sydney to the investment community, who are closely watching our progress. WSW will inject over $222 million each and every year into the local economy. We will be one of the largest employers in Western Sydney. We will transform Western Sydney into a major tourism hub, attracting international as well as domestic tourists to a world-class Winter Olympic training facility, a 4.5-star hotel and conference facilities. #wintersportsworld #wsw #newattraction #westernsydney 📸 David Hill, Deep Hill Media

In an incredibly busy, issues rich week, the post pandemic new normal for Australian tourism orientated businesses will struggle for headlines & analysis. The industry I’ve always observed exuding optimism at the first chance it can. And why not as visitor economy growth over the past 15 or so years has been fairly steady, despite the obvious major COVID & much less lasting short term flu or natural disaster impacts. Post COVID, albeit inflation & supply side cost driven, ‘visitor spend’ is now slightly above par in many parts of Australia with comparable visitor volumes according to Tourism Research Australia . The mix & travel behaviour has changed however & Victoria is behind the Qld and NSW rebound in the domestic stakes. Staying on the cost side, business operational costs have jumped out of the blocks & the list of issues around tiers of Govt is now a very long one for many. From car parking changes to permits and the all critical workforce and planning regimes alongside Australians travelling outbound again in almost record numbers. Trading impacts of up to 50 per cent for many good businesses in recent times is going to stoke major operational changes without some circuit breakers. There’s a sustainability question for many. Present at a chilly Friday morning Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism industry forum and a big crowd, our dynamic & most visited Victorian tourism region (8m plus annually served by 3300 businesses) is finding voice that 2024 operating trading conditions are not a new normal we want to stick around for long. There’a a lot in the mix & consumer confidence & COL has changed behaviours, just as many Australians want to keep up travel & hospitality activity. Innovation in operations & adaption remain quite key. But there also clearly needs to be more effective conversations had of the impact of all Govt spending, taxes, levies & charges for this broad sector. And some improved recognition - of both the current issues & some possible tangible better outcomes, in particular at the local level if mutually understood and pursued. 𝗜𝘀 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? Australia's appeal is undeniable, but let's not overlook the hidden costs. Higher living expenses, housing costs, and everyday prices can diminish the perceived benefits. New Zealand, with its more affordable lifestyle and natural beauty, often offers a better quality of life when you look beyond the surface. #QualityOfLife #NewZealand #CostOfLiving #AustraliaTruths

If you're coming to Portugal from the US or the UK would you find these points a challenge or would you adapt easily: 1️⃣ The sea water is cold - and you’ll probably never get used to it. This happens in most of the coast except in the Algarve. 2️⃣ Central heating is not as common as you would desire - the good news is that the country’s average temperatures are quite good. 3️⃣ Watch out for the mold - specially if you choose old buildings to live. 4️⃣ Get a dryer - in particular during winter, in some areas of the country, it can become a challenge to dry your clothes. 5️⃣ Bureaucracy takes time and patience. 6️⃣ Customer service can be tricky - this can be because there are many foreigners providing those services and different cultures can make the process a bit difficult. 7️⃣ Depending on the areas, and size of the property, rent can be expensive - thankfully, the cost of living makes up for it. 8️⃣ Buying property is a process - as a foreigner, be prepared to put down a deposit of 25-35% to secure a location and choose your property wisely respecting legal parameters that sometimes aren’t that obvious. 9️⃣ Construction can sometimes be hard and expensive in particular outside the big cities. This is because the country is developing at a fast rate and resources are becoming an issue in some areas. #Relocation #PortugalLiving #MultilingualLife #MoveToPortugal #Digitalnomads #Retirement #GoldenVisa #WorkRemotely #BeachDestinations #InternationalMoving #TaxBenefitsPortugal #IFICI #NHR

With the European summer upon us, Australians are saving less and spending more on travel, as reported by the AFR and the ABS. Given the constant questions of 'will they, won't they' in terms of the RBA and interest rates holds and hikes, these international travel figures highlight Australians are willing to spend and travel. According to the AFR, Australians are spending more on overseas travel currently, than prior to the pandemic, with a willingness to spend. To hear more on the current financial insights, tune into Siobhan Blewitt on ABC 774AM weekdays at 6:35am, and read more at fraiscapital.com. Source: AFR

Moving to a new place is more than just a change of address. Over the past two weeks, we’ve been working and exploring the North Island of New Zealand. It’s stunning, but it reminded me of our expat experiences. Whenever I step into a new destination, I feel what Australian expats experience when moving abroad. That mix of excitement, curiosity, and the unknown. But here’s the thing. ↳ It’s never just about finances and taxes. What’s the public transport like? Can you get around without a car, or is cycling the norm? Is the CBD alive on weekends, or does everyone head for the suburbs? And speaking of suburbs, where do most people actually live? What’s the climate like? ↳ Will that early morning run you love become a daily battle against the elements? What time do supermarkets close? ↳ Because nothing is more frustrating than arriving at 7 pm to locked doors. Every small detail matters. They’re the things that shape our everyday lives as expats. Moving somewhere new is an opportunity to do your homework. To research, observe, and imagine yourself living there. Because the little things make all the difference. #AustralianExpats #MovingAbroad #LifePlanning #ExpatLife #AussieExpats

Check out the demographic profile in Auckland and NZ Public Transport - bus and trains - amongst the under 35. See Chart 1 below. Our under-35 year old commuters are the biggest users of public transport, the future of economic activity. Growth is exploding - up 90 -110% over the 2013 consensus - in these age categories. This is being led by key international cities like London and Melbourne; the leadership is with our young executives – and corresponding falling car driver licence registrations. This is the result of better PT provision, the rising cost of car use, the loss of status of owning a car (it is not cool anymore), greater environmental awareness and, importantly, this generation likes public transport. This is also reflected in the under-35s participation on my own social media articles on PT. This is the future opening up in front of our eyes. Who can explain why we invest so little in this future?
