This past semester I took Diverse Voices, a class that discusses how different we all are, but at the same time, we are also just human. However, minorities are put in harder positions and struggle to be taken seriously in the workforce. This class has taught me numerous things, such as how our unconscious bias affects our perception of the world. Moreover, even just being a woman in a male-dominated field is a challenge. I have learned that we will not have real change until companies work more toward a diverse workforce. Through this class, I looked into e.l.f.'s DEI initiatives and discovered its Change The Board Campaign. This campaign aims to double the amount of women and diverse candidates on corporate boards by 2027. According to e.l.f., only 27% of the Board of Directors are women. Cathrine Hernandez-Blades's journey shows what it is like to be a woman in a male-dominated field and as she said. "It's really about tone at the top and promoting the most qualified people, or bringing the most qualified people into your organization regardless of whether or not they look like you." There’s nothing like women celebrating each other. Last week I had the honor of recognizing some of the most incredible business women in the Twin Cities! As one of the 50 honorees, I sat in awe as the emcee read the receipts for each person. The brief sentences listing accomplishments, awards, scale, and impact didn’t even scratch the surface of what it took to get to that room. RISKS. Carefully calculated risks. 💰There are the scary ones like financial risks to launch a business in an industry with very few of us. 📣Quiet personal ones like debating how I’m going to show up at the risk of being “too much” or “not enough.” ⏰Nagging ones like time risks. If I spend it on my career, will I run out of it with my family? What do I risk giving up if my time is “spent.” 🏃🏾♀️And the biggest risk of all. Ourselves. Do we believe in ourselves enough to take the leap? In reality, women business owners and leaders are the best budgeters. We are meticulously simultaneously mitigating and accumulating risk every second of everyday. The net profit of all that mathing is impact, profitability, and true leadership. So proud of Valdese Jones and this team! Being part of incredible teams that turn visions into reality is one of the greatest parts of my job at Wells Fargo. Capital and policy are prioritized with data. Resources are allocated with it; without it, gaps persist. Val knew data gaps were limiting awareness and prioritization of the incredible growth and strength of women entrepreneurs, small, and middle market business owners. She works with these companies every day and saw their stories were not being prioritized at the level they deserved coming out of the pandemic. Val knew industry thought leaders Geri Stengel and Angela Dingle shared this vision. Geri and Angela brought the power of Ventureneer, CoreWoman, and Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) to partner in compiling the data. Together, we partnered to launch the 2024 Wells Fargo Impact of Women-Owned Businesses report. Now we have the data! Did you know the fastest growing and best performing firms coming out of the pandemic were owned and led by #women! Those data and so much more are in the report Roby links to below. They are also now in the hands of media, policymakers, investors, and business owners who are beginning to use it to drive priorities - the vision is becoming a reality! The takeaways that Julie outlined are incredibly valuable: Hard work has no shortcuts—so true! Understanding the difference between being a leader and a manager is crucial. Leaning into others and gaining outside perspectives helps us grow. Networking internally is just as important as external networking. Great tip about having lunch or coffee dates with colleagues from different departments!
