As the COP28 climate summit concludes in Dubai, I am inspired by the collective efforts of governments, businesses, civil society and individuals to protect and restore our natural ecosystems. The United for Nature initiative, launched at COP28, is a global partnership that aims to mobilize action and resources to conserve and restore forests, mangroves, land and ocean. These ecosystems are not only vital for biodiversity, but also for mitigating climate change, enhancing food security, and improving human well-being. The initiative has already secured commitments from over 100 countries and 200 organizations to conserve and restore more than 1 billion hectares of land and ocean by 2030. #UnitedforNature #COP28 #EcosystemRestoration

COP16 in Colombia is debating the viability of the “30x30” agreement, which aims to protect 30% of the world's land and water resources by 2030. This goal, which plays a critical role in combating biodiversity loss and the climate crisis, is waiting to be supported by concrete actions by countries. However, the fact that none of the biodiversity targets set so far have been fully achieved reveals the difficulties of this process. As BeSustain, we support that the decisions to be taken at COP16 not only protect nature, but also offer solutions that are integrated with food security and climate policies. Let's build a sustainable future together. Last week, the Convention on Biological Diversity COP16 was held in Cali, Colombia, where critical discussions were had to commit to meaningful actions that will halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. As we face the escalating climate crisis, the risks of inaction on nature have never been clearer. The UN’s latest report warns that we are on course for a catastrophic warming of up to 3.1°C. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and immediate action to protect and restore our natural world. Despite the challenges, there have been notable successes in reversing biodiversity loss. From transforming industrial wastelands into thriving wildlife oases to establishing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), these efforts demonstrate that positive change is possible. However, these successes are just the beginning. The global economy continues to inflict more harm than good on nature, with biodiversity finance continuing to fall short of what is needed. In England, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) offers a promising pathway to restore our habitats and biodiversity. By ensuring that any development leaves the natural environment in a better state than before, BNG can help reverse the trend of biodiversity loss and create resilient ecosystems. With the catastrophic consequences of our actions becoming clear across the globe, there has never been a more urgent call for action. Collaboration across multiple sections is not just vital for Biodiversity Net Gain, but for addressing all climate and nature action. We must work together in order to achieve a Net Zero and Nature Positive future. #BiodiversityNetGain #ClimateAction #Sustainability #NatureRestoration #Biodiversity #COP16 #NaturePositive

Supporting COP29 Efforts for Climate Action As the COP29 Climate Conference unfolds in Baku, Azerbaijan, WILDTRUST stands in solidarity with the global call to prioritize nature-based solutions (NbS) to tackle the interconnected crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Wetlands and lakes, among the most effective natural carbon sinks, are vital in mitigating climate change and safeguarding ecosystems. These ecosystems can store up to five times more CO2 than tropical forests and serve as natural buffers against climate extremes, protecting communities and ecosystems from floods, droughts, and rising sea levels. However, with 85% of wetlands globally destroyed or degraded, bold action is urgently needed. At WILDTRUST, we are committed to fostering environmental sustainability through the conservation and restoration of critical ecosystems. We echo the call to integrate wetland restoration into national and global climate policies, recognizing these habitats as essential to achieving the 1.5°C target under the Paris Agreement. Through our projects, including the preservation of key habitats in community-owned reserves like Somkhanda, we champion collaborative action that incorporates indigenous knowledge, youth, and local communities as key stakeholders in conservation efforts. Together, we can create a future where nature and people thrive in harmony. Let’s continue to support innovative solutions that safeguard biodiversity and build resilience to climate change. COP29 Azerbaijan, held in Baku, concluded with progress on global climate initiatives. Key outcomes include establishing a standardised carbon market to address global warming and discussing mobilising climate finance and investment to accelerate climate action. These developments remind businesses to reflect on the environmental impact of their operations and strategies. While forests and oceans absorb nearly half of global carbon emissions, biodiversity remains under severe threat from human and business activities. Beyond environmental impacts, the financial materiality of biodiversity loss is growing, with risks to supply chains, resource availability, and long-term operational resilience. What steps is your organisation taking to safeguard biodiversity and mitigate these risks? Integrating nature-based solutions is critical for achieving climate goals and ensuring financial stability. One clear takeaway from COP 29: nature-based solutions like mangroves are not just nice to have—they are essential. Mangroves can store up to four times more carbon than rainforests, protect vulnerable coastlines from erosion, and sustain biodiversity. Yet, they’re under threat. Organizations must step forward to champion this cause. From planting trees in office spaces and industrial areas to launching and supporting initiatives like mangrove restoration, there are endless ways to contribute. These actions can drive tangible progress toward environmental sustainability and showcase leadership in climate responsibility. The climate discussions at COP 28 and 29 emphasized action—and this is where it begins. Let’s invest in restoring mangroves, not just for the environment but for the livelihoods they sustain and the future they secure. Together, we can turn climate promises into a greener reality. 🌍🌱 #COP29 #ClimateSolutions #MangroveRestoration #environmentalgoals #biodiversity #uae #sustainability #saveourplanet #yearofsustainability
