The Strength of the Wolf is the Pack The life of a wolf is far from easy. Every day is a constant struggle for survival as these animals work to patrol miles of territory, take down large and dangerous prey, face harsh elements, and battle the constant threat of illness, injury, and disease. While it is possible for a lone wolf to navigate these challenges successfully, the odds of survival are drastically increased for wolves living in a pack and working as a team. In addition, packs operate in a manner that requires each member to contribute equally toward the group’s shared responsibilities. This manner of cooperative living works to alleviate the pressures on not only the pack leaders but on every member of the family. Ultimately, wolves understand that the pack’s survival relies on teamwork and that working together yields the greatest potential for success. Just like a wolf that works with its pack to be successful and grow, so can we as a team in the workplace. Leadership is deeds, not words. When I was in a leadership position, folks saw me demonstrating daily my priorities. I didn’t just say that Family was important, I demonstrated it in everything that I did. When I commanded Fort Hood, Texas (the largest installation in the free world) I instituted polices to ensure folks focused on their Families. I demanded that everyone be home for dinner by 6:00pm, went home on Thursdays at 3:00pm for additional Family time, and didn’t work on weekends without my personal approval. And, you can bet that I lived by my own policies. Folks saw me focused on my Family, everyday. It is time for all of us to stop and think about how we are living our lives. Too many times people tell me that they are going to focus on work today, but they will focus on their Family tomorrow. They tell me that they will make the time to tell those they love that they love them….tomorrow. The problem with that logic is obvious. There is no guarantee that there will be a tomorrow. Feeling appreciative of the "elephants" around me today. We all know team members who exhibit amazing strength and intelligence. In every team, there are those who stand out not just for their skills but also for their ability to remember, adapt and navigate complexities with grace and intelligence. I think of these individuals as the "elephant people" of our team. They're anchored and ready to lead with their gentle yet powerful presence. Just don't mistake their gentle nature as a weakness - or as one of my colleagues says “don’t confuse nice for naive!”! Elephants aren't afraid to stand their ground when the time comes and will fiercely protect what's theirs. These people will go to bat for you, ready to step up, defend and support their colleagues when appropriate. Like elephants, these team members also possess remarkable memories, understanding the complexity of our business and the subtle nuances of our market and the people we work with! They remember past challenges and wins, learning and adapting from each experience and protecting their herd. The world is too chaotic for us not to rely on the people around us. Elephants are an important component of that ecosystem! Their wisdom, patience and dedication inspire us all. They are the ones who keep our collective knowledge intact, ensuring we don’t just move fast but also move wisely. To all the “elephant people” on our team – thank you. Working with family can be, to put it lightly, complicated. If you’re in a bit of an eggshell era now, I’ve got good news: it gets A LOT better. When I first started working with my dad, it was chaos. We’d have explosive arguments, and, while the fight never lasted very long, they led to a less-than-ideal working environment for everyone. But now, everything is different. Even as my brother is coming on board and changing the dynamic, those arguments just don’t happen anymore. We listen, we care, and we talk out our disagreements. It all comes down to time and experience. We had our fair share of eggshell holidays for a whole decade as we navigated family and work at the same time. But we’re finally comfortable now. Sometimes, the dynamic never changes and you can’t get to the level where we are now. But if you can get to this level, it’s a game changer! So don’t let the bad moments discourage you; give it a little more time, and you might just find the peace that I have! #FamilyBusiness #business #leadership #values #communications
