Amazon has just opted 200M+ Prime Video subscribers into video advertising. Or, They can pay $3 per month (a 33% increase on the existing price) to go ad-free, or essentially go back to what they had before. Why $3? 2 reasons: 1) Consumer tolerance This is what Amazon feel will be enough to retain those who care about the ad-free experience, no doubt informed by tonnes of data points 2) Amazon economics Those who pay are likely to be heavier users. Heavier users generate more ad revenue. So the price needs to be somewhere around the potential ‘loss’ in ad revenue: ➡️ $30 CPM = $0.03 per impression/ad viewed ➡️ Assume average 4 ads per episode = $0.12 ad revenue per ep viewed ⭐️ Magic number = 25 episodes a month = $3 It’s reasonable to assume heavy users are consuming around 6 eps a week How this all plays out is going to be a great case study for the video industry. Oh and Amazon are estimated to make another $2bn from it over the next year…💸
