In an innovative fight against Climate change and its detrimental effects on coral reefs, scientists have embarked on a mission to safeguard the future of these vital marine ecosystems through #cryopreservation. An interesting article by Zoe Richards (from the Trace and Environmental DNA Laboratory) in Current Biology by Cell Press entitled "Corals in an extinction vortex". Zoe's article is based on an excellent paper that highlighted the critical consequences of genetic diversity loss in endangered corals and was also published in Current Biology. In a detailed summary, Zoe states: "Population declines threaten many marine ecosystems, but their genetic consequences remain largely unknown. Spain: Lightsource bp partners with scientists from the Biological Station of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) to conduct research on the habitat of the Lesser Kestrel in Andalusia and analyse its interaction with other activities on the same land, such as solar farms.  ☀️⚡ The study was launched this spring in the rural areas around Seville. 🌊 🌱 Posidonia Oceanica is a protected marine plant that only grows in the Mediterranean Sea. It is not an algae. It plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by providing a habitat for many species to reproduce, feed, and find shelter. Like all plants, Posidonia Oceanica needs sunlight for photosynthesis, so it grows in clear, shallow waters. Transplanting Posidonia Oceanica (L.) Delile involves placing concrete modules (50x50 cm) with a thin honeycomb metal mesh for anchoring the cuttings in areas near the natural meadows. This method has been patented and tested in the LIFE program. ↔ Procedure: Cuttings are taken from a donor meadow and carefully prepared by marine biologists. Eight cuttings are placed in each module (32 cuttings per square meter). After one year, the modules are no longer visible. After five years, the number of shoots has tripled. After ten years, the transplanted area is indistinguishable from the natural meadow. The transplantation was carried out by CoNISMa, Lead Partner of the Community4Nature project of the Interreg Euro-MED Natural Heritage Mission, and by Econ srl.
