Attention all Emergency Departments across ANZ - not just regional, rural and remote... It's time to tackle the root causes of the access block issue. Let's call out the piecemeal, tokenistic responses by governments to hide the problem. Compulsory ambulance offload times and moving ambulance patients to short stay beds are not the solutions we need. The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine should make this the laser-focussed issue. We are well down the same pathway of the over-burdened NHS where much of Emergency Medicine has become 'traffic management'. What are we going to do about it? Where is the advocacy, the united voice from our college and its' members? Clinician's words have fallen on the deaf ears of governments. Hopefully in this meeting the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine told the other colleges of their critical role in advocacy and clinical to solving access block and not relying on risk continually being forced on Emergency Departments. Dr Caroline Taylor, NAPC Chair, attended the HSJ Virtual Care Conference last week and was part of the closing panel on ‘Building an engaged and flexible workforce to feasibly deliver virtual services at scale’ with Rachel Binks, Nurse consultant, Digital and Acute Care, Airedale Digital Care Hub and Niall Keenan, Consultant Cardiologist, Clinical Lead for Virtual Hospitals, Associate Medical Director, West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Caroline explained “It was interesting to hear about the different models they have for delivering virtual care in secondary care. In Primary Care there was a very quick shift to virtual consultations and appointments in Covid across community health and wellbeing services, but the challenge then and still now is that we don’t have the estate in primary care to allow our whole teams to be based and work together when delivering virtual care. "This leaves staff feeling unsupported and lacking the critical elements of connection and support that we all need from the teams we work with. In secondary care estate is much less of an issue and this has allowed very good team dynamics to develop delivering. It’s difficult to know what the solution is for primary care but was interesting to explore how successful virtual services can be with the right environment.”  #NHS #virtualcare #healthcare

🆕 In this conversation, we will explore the critical topic of selecting prehospital clinicians for high-stakes environments. We explore the traditional methods used in clinician selection and why they may fall short in the unpredictable world of pre-hospital care. We'll discuss the need to redefine performance criteria to better suit high-pressure situations and identify which mental and physical attributes are key indicators of reliable performance in challenging settings. ➡️ We will touch on the role of personality inventories and whether it's more advantageous to choose clinicians with diverse personalities or specific traits. We will also look at effective teamwork as an essential pre-requisite in prehospital care, how to assess a clinician's potential for collaboration and whether prioritising leadership or followership—or a balance of both, yields the best results. 📢 To do this I have Dr Chris Denny with me. Chris is an Emergency Medicine Specialist at the Auckland City Hospital. Additionally, he holds key roles as Medical Director of Northern Rescue (Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust) and he is a member of the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team (WHO Emergency Medical Team). Chris has expertise spanning acute care, leadership, and education, and has been helping to advance both emergency medicine and prehospital and retrieval medicine (PHRM) in New Zealand. This week, I marched in solidarity with my Emergency Medicine colleagues at Ascension St. John hosital 🏥 on Moross I was born at St. John, my mom worked there as a labor and delivery nurse, and I trained in the emergency medicine department during my fourth year at Wayne State University School of Medicine St. John’s Hospital 🏥 and Emergency Department is a critical part of our east side community serving Detroit, Grosse Pointe, SCS, Eastpointe etc… That is why I’m extremely saddened by the corporatization of the emergency medical services there 💰 It's alarming to see how nationwide, emergency medicine staffing agencies are being bought out by private equity groups, whose primary focus tends to be on profits rather than patient care. This shift can have profound implications for all of us. Longer wait times, overworked healthcare professionals, and compromised patient outcomes are just a few of the potential consequences. It's disheartening to know that according to NBC News, nearly 40% of U.S. hospital emergency departments are now overseen, staffed, or managed by companies owned by private-equity firms. Our healthcare system should prioritize people over profits. It's essential that we come together as a community to raise awareness and advocate for change. Our voices matter, and by speaking up, we can push for policies that prioritize patient well-being and support our dedicated healthcare professionals. Let's start a conversation. I have nothing against N.P's or P.A.s They are sorely needed in our health care system. But when a for-profit company is intentionally placing under-trained personnel in critical areas, well bad things will happen. How does this get fixed? https://lnkd.in/gwe39MwW There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but improving the conditions and pay of NPs and PAs can help ensure that they are adequately trained and motivated to provide the highest quality care in emergency rooms. Additionally, increased transparency regarding the credentials of the medical staff and their roles in the emergency room can help ensure that the public is aware of the qualifications of the medical staff they are receiving care from. Finally, restrictions on the use of NPs and PAs in emergency rooms can help ensure that their use is limited to areas where their knowledge and skills are appropriate.

Australia’s first Virtual Emergency Department—a service with the potential to completely reshape emergency-care delivery worldwide—has taken out the industry engagement category in The Australian Financial Review’s 2024 Higher Education Awards 🎉 Bringing together La Trobe's leading digital and public health expertise with the real-time needs of Northern Health patients, the innovative service is helping to ease the burden on strained hospital entry-points — and since roll out, has helped 86% of patients avoid an unnecessary trip to hospital. In my biannual review of Ontario's medical system, I want to emphasize the critical role of public medicine, especially during challenging times. Having experienced four sepsis episodes, I received exceptional care at Mackenzie Health from dedicated doctors and nurses who displayed both kindness and professionalism. Despite the excellent care, the shortage of nurses remains a concern, affecting the efficiency of emergency rooms. Implementing staggered shift changes or increasing nurse numbers could help alleviate this strain on the system. Expressing apprehension about the introduction of private clinics in Ontario, I stress the importance of maintaining a strong public health system to ensure equal access to quality care for all. Preserving this access is crucial for handling complex cases effectively. While acknowledging the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach in healthcare, concerns arise regarding the potential duplication and unequal geographic distribution of services in private clinics. Ensuring equal access to essential disciplines in all clinics, regardless of business viability, is vital to prevent disparities in healthcare based on location or wealth. #PublicHealth #OntarioMedicalSystem #HealthcareSystem #PatientExperience

People in #WilliamsLake and surrounding communities will benefit from more access to team-based urgent and primary health care with a new Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC) coming soon! Located at 47 Cameron St, the new Williams Lake UPCC is scheduled to open in early 2025 and will provide urgent and episodic primary care every day, including statutory holidays, when in full operation. When fully staffed, the UPCC will provide: ✅ Same-day care for people who need support for their health concerns within 12 to 24 hours, but do not require an emergency department. ✅ Care for conditions such as sprains, cuts, fevers, and minor infections. ✅ In-person, walk-in same-day appointments. ✅ Care for people who do not have a primary care provider, as well as people with a provider who are unable to schedule an appointment within 12 to 24 hours. ✅ Team-based care, which can include family physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, and Indigenous patient navigators.
