100 years ago this month, an engineer called Anton Flettner constructed an experimental rotor vessel named Buckau in Germany. In October 1924, Buckau was a retrofitted schooner carrying two rotors. The following year, it successfully set out on her maiden voyage across the North Sea, powered by rotor and a propulsion system withstanding high winds and sea states. Fast forward to 2024 and a lot has changed. The shipping industry faces many sea-monsters in the forms of climate change, high fuel prices and increasingly strict regulation. Here’s how we brought this project to life: 🔧 Removed the old engine. 🔧 Installed a new, Stage V-compliant Volvo Penta engine. 🔧 Modified the cooling pipelines. 🔧 Installed new exhaust systems, including after-treatment. 🔧 Achieved precision alignment with an Easy-Laser. 🔧 Added an AdBlue tank for efficient emissions reduction. During a historic celebration yesterday, the ABB powered all-electric tug eWolf has been christened at the Port of San Diego. https://ow.ly/4kuo30sF2u6 As the first all-electric, battery-powered harbor tug built and operated in the US, eWolf will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the port area of San Diego. ABB electric propulsion system to sustain zero-emissions operations at the Port of San Diego supporting the port Maritime Clean Air Strategy.
