The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF participates in the KijaniBox-eu project, officially launched last month in Nairobi, Kenya, which aims to accelerate Africa’s green transition. The primary objective of the project is to minimize food losses, mitigate sanitary risks, and promote energy access for small businesses. The project will run for four years, with the ESCI-UPF team leading critical tasks related to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Circularity Assessment, Life Cycle Costing, and Socioeconomic Assessment. #LCA #WasteManagement #Research

📢 Excited to share our latest research paper! Our newly published paper in World journal delves into the pressing waste management issues in Tamale, Ghana, and proposes a circular economy framework as a sustainable solution. In this study, we explore the potential of transitioning from a linear 'take-make-dispose' model to a circular one that focuses on reducing, reusing, recycling and generating energy from waste. This approach holds immense promise for not only addressing waste challenges but also creating economic opportunities and promoting environmental sustainability in Tamale. 🌍 I am thrilled to share that I recently participated in a webinar organized by the Institute of Environmental Assessment Ghana on "Circular Economy for Sustainable Growth." This insightful session provided me with a deeper understanding of sustainable practices and circular economy principles, which are crucial for our collective effort towards a more sustainable future. I am proud to have received a certificate for my involvement in this important discussion. ♻️ The circular economy is an innovative approach that focuses on rethinking and redesigning our current linear economic model. Instead of the traditional "take, make, dispose" mindset, the circular economy emphasizes the importance of keeping resources in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them while in use, and recovering and regenerating products and materials at the end of their service life. This model not only aims to reduce waste and environmental impact but also fosters economic growth and resource efficiency. Acted works towards a ‘3ZERO’ world, Zero Carbon, Zero Exclusion and Zero Poverty. As part of our work towards Zero Carbon, Acted has undertaken a rapid assessment in Kismayo, Baidoa, Banadir, and Hargeisa, Somalia/land, to identify opportunities to: i) study circularity within the plastic and bio-waste value chains, and ii) develop programming that catalyzes these opportunities. In Somalia/land, the heightened occurrence of extreme climate events has evolved from sporadic incidents to a troubling norm over the past few decades. This has intensified the ecological challenges faced by the country, arising primarily from climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and inadequate environmental governance. These challenges collectively impose significant pressure on Somalia's natural ecosystems, exacerbating the vulnerability of local communities. The kickoff meeting, held from October 22 to 24, brought together 14 partners, with seven institutions from African countries (Senegal, Uganda, and Kenya) and seven from European nations (Germany, Spain, and Italy).
