🌍 Driving Sustainability in India's Power Sector 🌱 The Ministry of Power has proposed a 36-month extension for Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) to install Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems, ensuring compliance with SO₂ emission norms. While strides have been made, challenges like limited domestic manufacturing capacity and reliance on imports have hindered progress. Key Insights: ✔️ Out of 600 units, FGDs are operational in 44 units (~22.6 GW). ✔️ Contracts for 233 units (~102 GW) are awarded. ✔️ Annual FGD installation capacity is ~16-20 GW. This initiative highlights the critical role of collaboration between ministries, vendors, and stakeholders in achieving sustainable environmental goals. While doing some research work, I got to know this fantastic promotion tool for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage, namely Section 45Q of the US tax code. It's fascinating to see how such mechanisms can incentivize industries to invest in technologies that mitigate carbon emissions. We (#India) should also consider designing a such type of tool to promote CCUS within the country. One of the main challenges hindering the adoption of CCUS in India is the operational cost, and a tool like this could be instrumental in mitigating it. As a result of implementing this tool, the operational costs would be significantly reduced, making it easier for industries to adopt CCUS technologies. This not only benefits businesses but also contributes to the preservation of #MotherEarth. I recommend to you all read out the complete document. There is no doubt in the fact that CBG has emerged as a promising alternative fuel and Govt' s vision to reduce imports and increase self dependency (Atmanirbhar Bharat), however there are still several challenges that hinder its quality and efficient production in the country. Regulatory norms poses significant challenges, leading to delays and uncertainties in project implementation. Setting up of CBG plants is still being done at a very slow pace due to factors like high initial investment costs, lack of awareness, and technical expertise. Another major problem is with the availability of continuous and regular feedstock. Municipal councils and Corporations have not shown their interest in tying up with CBG operators. Availability and accessibility of farm waste is very uncertain impacting the scalability and sustainability of CBG production. Another challenge is to inject the CBG produced in the CGD network. Transportation through cascades is not a very viable option. Further, Steel/MDPE pipelines networks are not generally available near CBG plants. As these plants are being set up in rural areas due to the constraint of huge land requirements. To conquer these challenges, support of State governments and local administration is very much essential so that we can collectively pave the way towards a future of energy sovereignty for India.
