☝️Learn more about application of #simulators for verification and validation of #instrumentationandcontrol systems of #nuclearpowerplants
Renewal of power plant’s I&C systems is a complex task, especially in the nuclear sector. Fortum has gained much experience of such projects lately and some of our key findings are: * Plan well ahead * Test as much as possible beforehand, already in the basic design phase (simulation assisted testing enables this) * Utilize dynamic simulation in all project phases to support V&V since it provides so much more insight of the system functionalities For more detailed information, please see following success story from our ELSA-project: https://lnkd.in/dtA5ZT4J

I want talk about how to improve the next generation of nuclear facility construction. There are many factors involved and will take more time than this posting will allow. Therefore, I will post a series of our history and recommendations over the next few months. What went wrong in the previous generation? A multitude of studies have been completed to analyze the issues. Let us start with costs. First, we need to define some terms: direct costs and indirect costs. Direct costs are the costs of materials and labor for building the reactor equipment and the turbine/generator side of the plant. Indirect costs are all the other “stuff.” This includes construction support such as engineering, temporary construction facilities, payroll insurance/taxes, management, and construction tools and equipment. Now, what caused the horrible cost overruns of the past? Well, given the obvious complexity of the technology it should be easy to see right? It would be the plant itself: the reactor and turbine generator. The sad truth however is you would be wrong. Those indirect costs mentioned above accounted for roughly 72% of the cost increase in nuclear power plants of the past. When we next build, one key will be to “act fast” when we break ground.

I think all involved with this project at KUKA can be rightly proud of their acheivements. A great example of how to deploy industrial robots in one of the harshest environments know to mankind. Truly world class engineering to overcome a series on unique challenges. #KUKA #innovation #decommissioning #robotics #nuclear #ukmanufacturing #systemintegration
Our Box Encapsulation Plant has handed over its waste treatment cell to commissioning, completing its biggest milestone to date and ahead of schedule. 👏 The facility will be vital in supporting our mission by taking waste from the site’s legacy facilities and packaging it for interim storage and final disposal. Andy Sharples, our projects director, said: "This is an incredible achievement and the Box Encapsulation Plant team deserve a lot of credit for the commitment and hard work in ensuring we deliver this milestone. "I can’t thank the team enough and I hope they take great pride in the fact that, even when challenges arose, they didn’t take their eye off the mission, safely and professionally getting us to this point." Chris Harrop, BEPDT, delivery manager said, "The waste treatment cell will be a fully remote processing cell. It's equipped with two state of the art Kuka robots and will be the main repackaging hub of the plant. "This is effectively many milestones rolled into one and success is purely down to the dedication and skill of the project team." KUKA robots are used in many hazardous environments where the handling and management of dangerous materials must be undertaken without any human intervention. Our system partners rely upon the repeatability, accuracy, and fortitude of the KUKA products to design and deliver solutions to industry, to safely manage hazardous materials in challenging environments. This is a fascinating story, more of which can be read on Sellafield's website (link below) Dave Burns #materialshandling #hazardousmaterials #automation #robotics #wastemanagement #industrialrobotics

The topic of nuclear arose during a conversation in Glasgow last week. There is no urgency from the powers that be to sort the UK's legacy nuclear waste. The scary part is some of the storage facilities in which it is held are as old as the hills. This is a step in the right direction, but there is so much more that needs to be done...

For energy and finance professionals, here's the latest 𝗡𝘂𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 report, published on October 29, 2024 by U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information. The main reason I'm reposting it is to counter the recent wave of dilettante publications on new nuclear which operate with vague descriptive categories and promiscuously picked facts but offer derogatory opinions on SMRs - a clear malpractice with an agenda, overstepping into violation of criminal laws on publicly traded securities. This solid official kind of material will establish a standard for qualified discussions, I hope. Let us increase its circulation please.
