IAEA launched a collaboration with the G20 to highlight the key role that nuclear energy can play in achieving energy security and climate-change goals. The aim of this first-of-its-kind partnership with G20, the world’s largest economic group, is to build momentum for nuclear power. It is the first time IAEA has presented to G20 the issues relating to nuclear power.

☢ The Future of Nuclear Power in the UK: Challenges and Opportunities 🌍⚛️ 🚀 The UK’s nuclear industry is at a pivotal moment as the nation steers toward a net-zero carbon future Imperial College London’s Energy Futures Lab has just released a groundbreaking white paper titled "The Future of Nuclear Power in the UK: Challenges and Opportunities." This comprehensive study dives deep into the UK's nuclear energy prospects, outlining both the immense opportunities and the significant challenges ahead. 🔍 Current Landscape and Ambitious Goals The UK government aims for nuclear power to make up 25% of electricity production by 2050. However, with the majority of the current 6.5GW capacity set to be decommissioned within the next decade, the urgency for new nuclear projects is critical. 💡 Why Nuclear Power Matters Nuclear energy is key for achieving net-zero carbon emissions, offering a reliable, low-carbon alternative. The white paper highlights the crucial role of nuclear energy in enhancing energy security and the global trend of investment in nuclear R&D. 📈 The advancement of nuclear energy in the UK hinges on overcoming five primary challenges: 1. Bridging the Capacity Gap: Significant investment needed to bridge the gap to the targeted 24GW by 2050, estimated at £5.2 to £10.4 billion per year. 2. Economic Considerations: High upfront costs must be balanced with long-term pricing. Strategic planning, robust policies, and diverse funding sources are crucial. 3. Workforce and Skills Development: Address aging workforce and skill shortages through immediate interventions and collaboration with academic institutions. 4. International Collaborations: Partnerships with global bodies for technology sharing, cost-sharing, and aligning with international standards are essential. 5. Public Engagement and Support: Transparent communication and community compensation schemes are vital to build public trust and highlight nuclear energy's role in net-zero goals. 🔧 Strategic Recommendations The white paper concludes with strategic recommendations to develop the nuclear workforce, enable international collaborations, and implement supportive policies. Addressing these areas can position the UK as a leader in nuclear energy and drive the transition to a low-carbon economy. 📑 The Future of Nuclear Power in the UK white paper provides an evidence-based evaluation of the timescales, costs, skillsets, and collaborations needed for the UK to achieve its ambitious nuclear energy plan. It's a must-read for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and anyone interested in the sustainable energy future of the UK. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eUJmAUMt #NuclearEnergy #NetZero #SustainableFuture #EnergyTransition #UKEnergy #ImperialCollegeLondon #EnergyFuturesLab #PublicEngagement #InternationalCollaboration

This is a significant development in #Singapore's journey towards their goal of net zero with #climatechange: moving towards peaceful nuclear use. The pursuit of nuclear technologies could offer a reliable and sustainable energy source to meet rising demands and support climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting the growing energy needs in Singapore. Advanced nuclear technologies have the potential to enhance energy security and diversify the energy mix. While there will be fear of the use of nuclear technologies (if you follow the evolution of the technology in the last decade), the fourth generation of nuclear plants such as TerraPower is designed to be safe and to deal with nuclear meltdowns. The first of these reactors is now in construction in the US. However, addressing public concerns about safety, waste management, and regulatory frameworks, along with substantial investments in infrastructure and expertise, are crucial steps. The recent agreement with the US marks a pivotal move towards exploring these possibilities and assessing the feasibility of peaceful nuclear energy in Singapore. https://lnkd.in/g6h9w_9d #nuclearenergy
