Nuclear Power gets a second chance now as AI becomes (electric) power hungry. Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have taken different routes to assure more power for their AI efforts in the future by working with power companies that have nuclear power plants or they are exploring the use of SMRs, small modular reactors. Getting the reactor designs certified is the main delay in this endeavor. Even retrofitting the old reactors and making them productive again runs into regulation and licensing delays. But it is good that the US industry is looking at this magic power source of modern era to improve the base load capacity so that new AI based applications can run without a power glitch. Helium-cooled high temperature pellet fuel reactor is a concept now being discussed in this mix. Such a reactor is already in production in China. The regulators are checking out this concept in a test bed in the USA so that it can be licensed for commercial operation in the near future. Advanced water reactor concept is already in production in one facility in the US. Small Modular Reactors can help in improving the safety and improve the construction times and make the projects run on time. Overall, nuclear energy is a talk of the town lately, and utility stocks are running hot as a result, and the big tech exploring this power source is also seeing upticks in respective stock prices.
