🔬 Our 5th Proof of Concept (PoC) funding call is open for projects from interested parties who have the experience and knowledge necessary to investigate and exploit areas in which biofilms play a central part. ℹ️ Projects will be expected to develop a concept, idea or technology from any application sector, which can be in a laboratory, model or real world setting, to give confidence for further work. The PoC programme is not aimed at basic research, we would expect projects to be at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 2-6. 💡 We expect to fund up to 20 projects lasting up to 12 months and for NBIC contribution to be on average between £25-75K in total (100% FEC) for each project. Combined, our previous four PoC calls received 207 applications from which 83 projects were awarded funding - representing a £4.4m investment from NBIC and a total value of £6.7m. Well – I can no longer claim to be a “NO-vid” 🤒 and now I can appreciate how covid isn’t just like having a cold (and I know I haven’t even had it bad!). But finally after two weeks I feel more normal and am very grateful to Gustavo Ezequiel Carrizo, MSc at Nucleate Argentina for re-scheduling my talk to the Nucleate Genesis cohort to today – and equally grateful for Robert Cogger-Ward for jumping in to help me out as no way could I have chatted through the entire thing alone yet! And thank you to everyone on the Nucleate Genesis programme for some very interesting ❓ questions! ❓ Since the talk covered a range of topics, from patentability, IP strategy (just write it down guys!) pitfalls, licensing, budgets etc – I thought I’d turn the talk into series of short snippety snip ✂ posts, instead of the LONG ones I tend to write when inspiration strikes. So..to start.. 🎬 Intellectual property comes in various flavours 🍦, each serving a unique purpose in protecting your innovations. The main types include: ♥ Patents: inventions and processes. ♥ Trademarks: brand names and logos. ♥ Copyrights: creative works and software code. ♥ Trade Secrets: Cover proprietary information not disclosed to the public. A good IP strategy often combines these protections to cover all aspects of your business. Some of them may not be appropriate early on – e.g.  a biotech startup might not give a bag of 🐤s for designs..but when you start selling your glorious products you might be all about the aesthetics. #syntheticbiology #biotechnology #engineeringbiology #innovation #startups #spinouts #phd #postdoc
