Have you heard? 🎉 Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Deb Haaland announced on Tuesday, December 17 the designations of 19 new #NationalHistoricalLandmarks. We’re spotlighting 3 standout sites that showcase America’s diverse heritage: Summit Camp 📌 California The largest Chinese railroad worker camp from the Transcontinental Railroad era (1865-1869), highlighting the crucial contributions of Chinese immigrants in building America. Charleston Cigar Factory 📌 South Carolina Site of a pivotal 1945-1946 strike led by African American women workers, showcasing the intersection of labor rights and civil rights activism. Loudoun County Courthouse 📌 Virginia Location of the pivotal 1933-1934 Crawford trial that transformed civil rights law. The case led to Charles Hamilton Houston becoming the NAACP's first special counsel, launching their strategic legal campaign to end segregation. Juneteenth stands as a testament to the ongoing evolution of the United States toward the ideals enshrined in the Constitution's preamble. The document's opening phrase, "We the People," acknowledges the ongoing process of building a more perfect union. Juneteenth celebrates the significant progress made with the abolition of slavery, but also serves as a powerful reminder that the pursuit of liberty and justice for all remains unfinished business. On this day, we recommit ourselves to the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice. We can all be a #forceforgood by actively working towards a more perfect union, where the promise of liberty and justice truly extends to all.

The next Democratic Administration must offer a new liberalism for the sixties - a liberalism which reaches beyond the era of the New and Fair Deals to the problems of a new age. The Liberal Party of New York - with its searching questions, its creative proposals, its new ideas - is playing an important part in the birth of this new liberalism. The Liberal Party helps to keep the oldest party in the world - the Democratic Party - young, vigorous, creative and liberal. And that is the kind of Democratic Party which the nations needs. First, we must extend and modernize the great social welfare programs of Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. We must raise the minimum wage, extend unemployment compensation, provide our older citizens with a decent system of medical care, feed our hungry and care for our sick. We must make a living reality of the vision of Franklin Roosevelt - the vision of a decent life with dignity for all men. Secondly, we must carry on with new vigor and effectiveness the fight for equal opportunity for all men - regardless of race, creed or color. During the primary campaigns Hubert Humphrey said that if the price of political success was a betrayal of the cause of human rights then the people could look elsewhere for a candidate. And I say that if anyone expects the next Democratic Administration to betray that same cause - they can look elsewhere for leadership. We must faithfully carry out the law of the land as interpreted by the Supreme Court. And this includes the protection of people exercising their Constitutional rights of peaceful protest. But this is not just a matter of law and order. Above all moral issues are involved. The high office of the Presidency must be used to provide the effective, creative, persuasive leadership necessary if we are to fulfill our great Constitutional promise of equal protection for all Americans. Beginning in 1961 the Presidency will be a place of strong moral leadership. That leadership will be exercised until every American, of every color and faith, has achieved equal access to all of American life - and that means equal access to the voting booth, to the schoolroom, to jobs, to housing and to the lunch counters. Third, we must formulate and carry forward a coherent, consistent, convincing American program for peace - an effective program for arms control and disarmament. And, while we work toward peace, we must also remember the hard lessons of the Summit: The lesson that peace takes more than talk - the lesson that friendly words, and goodwill trips, and public relations programs are not enough - the lesson that only a strong America can hope to be a peacemaking America. And this means we must begin to rebuild our strength - not merely our missiles and armies, although these are important, but economic strength at home, the strength of our allies overseas, the strength of our ideas, the strength of our determination and the strength of our purpose. https://lnkd.in/gvRQrN_V

This is the second article in a series describing the first six years, 2014 – 2020, in the transformation of one of the largest local unions in the United States, United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA). The transformation continues today under Cecily Myart-Cruz’s presidency. Given the critical impacts that the victories of Trump and his broader right-populist Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement will have on the social and political terrain of the country, this installment looks at imperatives for labor in the coming years. It integrates lessons from UTLA and the broader educator union movement, which fought necessary defensive battles during Trump’s first term and, critically, also went on offense to make significant breakthroughs in red, blue, and purple states. As we observe Juneteenth, the AAMC recognizes the significance of this day in American history and the importance of reflecting on our collective journey toward equality. June 19 marks the true end of slavery in the United States, a crucial moment when Major General Gordon Granger and Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Yet, nearly 160 years later, we continue to strive for the fundamental promise of ‘liberty and justice for all.’ Systemic change requires more than new rules; it demands personal accountability, education, courage, and the willingness to engage in difficult conversations. We must unlearn long-held societal norms and confront the ways historical injustices shape today's inequalities. As Frederick Douglass wisely noted, “The life of the nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful, and virtuous.” Let us seize this moment to commit to creating a future where equity and justice are realities for all. #Juneteenth #Equity #AcademicMedicine #SocialJustice

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress took a break from writing the Articles of Confederation and passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” Over 100 years later, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day. #HappyFlagDay #AmericanHistory #OldGlory #HemlockInsuranceGroup #HemlockisHere #LivingstonCountyInsurance #LivingstonCountyMI #LivCo #BrightonSmallBusiness #HomeAutoLifeCommercialInsurance

Office of the Provost: Afro-Descendant Institute of Human Rights and Facilitator of the Afro-descendant Confederation I surely appreciated the advanced understanding of Chairman Omar Yeshelita and the confusion that exists among the “Black left”. I fully support the twin goals of “Self-determination and Reparation. The Black left must denounce and lodge a “No Confidence Vote” in the upcoming election in order to clarify “our platform” which is markedly different from the “Negro left” and the “Negro Right” who blindly supports either the Democratic or Republican Parties without an agenda item on their mutual platforms. I delighted in the distinction that was made between the “welfare state” and a “state of our own”, which is what self-determination means. We have no place in the “Two-Party” system and should be flocking to the courts to defend Chairmen Yeshelita but more importantly we must understand and forge the new Afro-descendant Confederation that promotes the twin goals of Self-determination and Reparations as our PLATFORM. We must build a “Confederation” based on our mutual interest to do less furthers the hypocrisy of our being an American citizen. It was our foremost intellectual that said there was no such thing as “second class citizenship” Malcolm X. The outdated Negro left embodied in Civil Rights organizations have to engage in a real way with our twin goals of “Self-determination and Reparations”. https://lnkd.in/eaXbd_6f

📜 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, reminds us that everyone has the right to equality, freedom, and a life of dignity. The values enshrined in this declaration – freedom, justice, and equality – continue to serve as a guiding light. 🌍 Today, we celebrate this day and connect it to our current reality – the ongoing events in Georgia. Now Georgian citizens are fighting to defend democracy, justice, and human rights. This struggle again reminds us that human rights are the foundation of our future.
