Know thy thistle It looks like Grace Jones smoking a cigar A google search for Grace Jones thistle returned only Grace Jones smoking a cigarette. Others suggest it might be Musk Thistle—it does have spine tipped leaves This is not helpful. I’m just hungry, and want to know if this goes in the salad, or on my back If that’s Musk Thistle: — Pith of stem - boiled[61]. A pleasant taste[105], it is eaten like asparagus[177]. Said to be delicious[183]. The dried flowers are used as a curdling agent for plant milks etc[61, 183].The flowers are febrifuge and are used to purify the blood[145, 240]. The seeds contain a fixed oil that is rich in linoleic acid[240]. This has proved of benefit in the prevention of atherosclerosis[240]. https://lnkd.in/gxUA6c4E Said to be delicious The others picked the wrong thistle and didn’t make it back to give a review #photoart #montana #food #wilderness #humour #survival #noct #glaciers

One of my favorite ways to prepare for winter time is to make infused honey. What does that mean? Simple: infusing the power of herbs or something else medicinal into raw honey. This makes it incredibly easy to make yourself a cup of medicinal tea when you're too sick to formulate or move around much. Just put a spoonful of this into a mug and pour boiling water over it and you have instant tea! I try to only do this with herbs or things that I don't mind eating (such as fresh sage or thyme) because it's difficult to strain the herbs out and chewing on dried herb matter isn't exactly pleasant. Do you think you will prepare this for your winter medicine cabinet? #herbalism #honey #herbaltea #ginger #stomachache #urinarytract #herbalsupport #naturalremedies

Who knew butterflies had such a unique taste? 🦋 These delicate creatures aren't just about sipping nectar. They actually crave mud! Yes, mud! Turns out, it’s a crucial source of minerals like sodium, essential for their survival and reproduction. Butterfly Buffet: Mud Puddling You might think butterflies are all about sipping nectar from colorful flowers, but there’s a surprising twist to their diet: mud! Yes, you heard right, these delicate creatures have a penchant for something that might seem less than appetizing to us – mud pudding. Why Mud? It might seem odd, but mud is actually a vital source of nutrients for butterflies, especially minerals like sodium. These tiny creatures need these minerals for various functions, including flight and reproduction. Flower nectar, while sweet, doesn’t provide enough of these essential salts. The Mud-Puddling Process When butterflies discover a suitable mud puddle, they gather in groups, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. They extend their proboscis, a long, tubular tongue, into the mud and suck up the nutrient-rich liquid. This behavior is often more prevalent in males, as the sodium they acquire can be transferred to females during mating, improving the quality of their offspring. More Than Just Mud Butterflies aren’t picky eaters. They might also be found indulging in other mineral-rich substances like rotting fruit, animal dung, and even carrion. It's all part of their quest for essential nutrients to survive and thrive. So, the next time you see a group of butterflies gathered around a muddy puddle, don't be surprised. They're simply enjoying a delicious and nutritious meal. Nature never ceases to amaze, right? 🌎 #nature #butterflies #science #funfacts #didyouknow Pic - Lime butterflies on Mud puddling process! Today in fruit beauty-marks we’re highlighting Green Oranges! Have you ever noticed that the sweetest oranges sometimes have a tinge of green to them? That’s because of a process called “citrus regreening,” which happens when excess sunlight shines in the orchard. The sun triggers chlorophyll production in the peel to help protect the fruit from sunburn. This gives it a green color that’s not only safe to eat, but may actually indicate extra sweetness. "Birch triptych 2009" Heinz Effner Fine-Art-Nature-Photography Intuitive-awarded-exclusive Winter in Weilheimer-moss 2009 I like birch trees very much. They are tough, adaptable and sympathetic .... As the hardiest deciduous tree of all, the birch is the "Tree of the North". It is the national tree of the Finns and plays the main role in numerous myths. Due to the birch tar stored in the bark, even wet birch wood burns. In addition, all parts of the birch are usable: the birch sap in the spring is a healthy vitamin drink, the leaves give a tasty, slightly tart salad and the branches of the birch can be processed as brooms...
