[WATCH] Over the past few decades, fruit and vegetable production as well as the number of farms producing them are on a decline in the United States. At the same time, the U.S. is prioritizing commodities like corn and soybeans which support livestock and fuel production, rather than human consumption. Americans are increasingly getting their produce from overseas. In 2021, U.S. imports of fresh fruit and vegetables accounted for 60% and 38% of total U.S.′ supply. Why are U.S. fruit and vegetable farms in decline, when we need them more than ever? #farming #agriculture #rural #agribusiness #farmbill #whatsnext https://lnkd.in/eTgh4YpH

Potato #production in Hungary fell from 1.2 MT (1992) to 216 KT (2023) - which is quite a development. The amount of #potatoes harvested in #Hungary has decreased dramatically over the past decade, and if we look at the numbers before the 2000s, the picture is even worse. Since 1992, most potatoes were harvested in Hungary in 1996, 1.3 MT, and then the decline started. In the following years, the harvested quantity was still over 1 MT, but in 2000 there was a serious fall, which has been continuous ever since. In 2023, only 216 KT of potatoes were grown on Hungarian soil, although an increase from 199 KT in 2022, is not enough for much. #agriculture The news source is in the comment.

Could Australian wheat exports be up 25% this year, potentially reaching the 3rd highest level ever? The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) forecasts the country's wheat crop to be 31.8 MMT, an increase of 2.7 MMT due to favorable weather in key regions. ABARES anticipates near-record production levels in New South Wales and Queensland, with above-average production in Western Australia. However, dry conditions in South Australia and Victoria may impact yields negatively. Australia, the world's 3rd largest wheat exporter, could see exports of around 25 MMT from a 32 MMT crop, depending on domestic consumption and global demand. The "exportable surplus" might be limited by domestic livestock feed requirements. While 3.5 MMT was fed last year, poor pastures could raise domestic feeding to 5.7 MMT, compared to a low of 1.9 MMT over the past 25 years. Agriculture is crucial for Pakistan’s economy, and the wheat crisis has only highlighted the significance of the agricultural sector for food security and livelihoods. Muhammed Zulqarnain explains that the crisis was exacerbated by the government’s import of wheat, which led to a surplus stock and delayed procurement from domestic farmers. The farmer community has been up in arms, demanding that the government address their concerns and meet the wheat procurement quota at a supporting price. Crop Prices: Mixed Trends in Relation to MSPs As we navigate through FY25, the rural economy is facing challenges with fluctuating crop prices. While food inflation has surged due to vegetable price hikes, other agricultural commodities are showing a mixed picture. 🌾 Above MSP: Maize and wheat are selling above MSP in most regions, providing some relief to farmers. 🌱 Below MSP: Common paddy, certain oilseeds, and pulses are trading below MSP in specific markets, raising concerns for farmers in these sectors. 🛢️ Government Intervention: The government’s reduction of duties on imported edible oils aims to support oilseed farmers, but additional steps may be needed to stabilize the market. With many farmers dependent on MSPs for financial security, these mixed price trends could impact the effectiveness of current schemes. Urgent measures are essential to ensure stability and sustained growth in the agriculture sector. #Agriculture #Farming #MSP #RuralEconomy #Farmers #AgricultureEconomy #CommodityPrices #GovernmentPolicy
