🌎 Each #EarthDay gives me an opportunity to pause and remember why I’m doing this work, thinking back on the successes of the last year and looking toward what needs to be accomplished in the year to come. My reflections for #EarthDay2024:   The Why Every year the same – it’s my kid. I want him and his generation to have a world that they are not only surviving in but thriving in. Working to decarbonize our built environment, our economy and to build resilience is a critical piece in ensuring future generations' success, and this understanding helps spur me on, even on the hardest days.   The Successes In the last couple of weeks, I’ve had a wonderful opportunity through Better Buildings Better Plants Summit and Urban Land Institute's Spring Meeting to be with many of the best minds focused on sustainability in real estate. Many of them represent organizations that are showing leadership through programs like Institute for Market Transformation’s Green Lease Leaders (congrats to the #2024GreenLeaseLeaders!), and there are so many more out there putting in the work, heads down, facing the challenges and finding solutions.   The Year Ahead BREEAM drives more informed decision-making and thoughtful action all over the world, and we recognize our responsibility to deliver the most robust, critical and science-driven standard to guide and support the real estate industry. My biggest goal is ensuring that #BREEAM Version 7 continues to provide the forward-thinking, science-driven, holistic framework to measure performance, drive business decision-making making and provide the transparency our industry needs to measure how successful we are in moving towards decarbonized, resilient, healthy and productive buildings. Doing this work day in and day out, it's easy to let the bigger picture slip out of frame every now and then in the bustle of it all. On days like today, I'm grateful to join so many like-minded peers and friends in taking a step back and refocusing on what makes this work so meaningful.

This week we've see numerous headlines and discussions centered around young people and rising crime rates. The Youth Justice Bill is under scrutiny, and there are ongoing debates about what could, should and will be done differently. As someone who has spent years working with young people in various settings and now leading an organisation that has engaged with over 12,000 young people in the past year alone, I can say this with confidence, there needs to be far greater investment in early intervention and prevention approaches if we want to see real change.  Young people crave connection—connection to each other and to their community. Connection is one of the most powerful protective factors for young people, enabling them to make healthy, safe choices and live out their fullest potential. Early intervention and prevention programs are critical in fostering connections, and time and again, they have demonstrated positive, impactful outcomes for young people. We need to advocate for greater investment in programs and initiatives that seek to work alongside young people at the earliest opportunity. It is through this work that we can truly make a difference, one which supports young people and contributes to keeping communities safe.   At Blue Light our focus is on the needs of young people. We deliver programs that support early intervention and crime prevention and would like to see more young people access our initiatives.
