💰 When considering #SchoolFunding, most discussions focus on formulas and future spending. But what about the very lines on the map that determine where school district dollars are raised and spent? TODAY, our 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 #𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 released an in-depth report and dynamic mapping tool showing exactly where the racial and economic divides between neighboring districts are the deepest, and how they often separate students from resources—and from each other. Along the most segregating borders, differences in funding can amount to thousands of dollars per pupil, placing a disproportionate burden on state budgets to bridge the gap. To address these disturbing interdistrict disparities, policymakers must reimage their approach to #SchoolFinance. I had the pleasure of working with the New America – Education Policy Program team (Zahava Stadler & Jordan Abbott). This project examines how school district boundaries not only delineate areas where children attend schools but also determine the taxing jurisdiction supporting those schools with local property taxes. These boundaries, rooted in historical discriminatory housing policies, perpetuate segregation and inequity in education; however, the research demonstrates how they can be redrawn to create more equitable outcomes, as highlighted in New America’s Education Funding Equity Initiative report below, which analyzes adjacent school districts and features stories from educators and families, alongside an interactive national map and data tool(link below) illustrating the economic and racial divisions created by these borders which was developed by Center for Geospatial Solutions. 👍Good news: More children than ever are in school 👎Bad news: Many are not mastering basic skills In a new report, my colleagues and I researched 14 school systems that are beating the odds and interviewed over 200 industry leaders to find out what’s working and how to scale improvements. Our conclusion? If all systems globally applied the lessons from these successful systems, as many as 350 million children could be lifted out of learning poverty by 2050. So how do we do it? We outline a set of 4 reinforcing strategies that can help create a virtuous cycle for long-term, outsized improvements in student learning. But does it add up for education and those facing hardship? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eEkU3YaS 🗞️Less low-income pupils reaching university The percentage of young people from low-income backgrounds in England attending university has fallen for the first time on record, sparking concerns that social mobility in the country is regressing. 🗞️'Crumbling classrooms' cash pledge The government has pledged £1.4 billion to meet a target of rebuilding 50 schools in England a year, so that children do not have to learn in "crumbling" classrooms. 🗞️Disadvantaged schools face toughest challenges Schools in areas of significant socioeconomic disadvantage face complex challenges, struggling to recruit teachers, spending more on supply staff, and covering higher costs for basic pupil supplies, according to a new analysis by SchoolDash 🗞️Dogs, taxi rides and wellness sessions To tackle high levels of absence, schools in England and Wales are using creative methods like therapy dogs, prize vouchers, wellness sessions, taxi rides, and shepherd's huts to encourage regular attendance among pupils. In a recent report from the New York state comptroller’s office, child poverty rates in upstate NY cities were found to be among the highest in the U.S. Across New York, nearly one in five children live in poverty. This report stresses the urgency for investments in New York schools to disrupt the cycle of poverty and support learners with a whole school, whole child, whole community approach to learning. Across the state, schools serving students living in poverty lack the necessary resources to ensure their success and well-being. Moreover, research suggests that students' access to civic learning opportunities falls largely along socioeconomic and racial lines. To fulfill students' right to a sound basic education that prepares them for college, a career, and civic participation, we need an updated school funding formula that addresses these learners' and their families' specific needs. #SBE4all #civicpreparation https://lnkd.in/eN2hPARG Office of the NYS Comptroller Thomas P. We love seeing #hope being integrated into local schools! One of the reasons mixed-income communities are so successful is that they provide hope for Tulsans who previously didn't have the opportunity to see what was possible. When you're surrounded by #poverty, especially generational poverty, it can significantly limit what you think is possible. In other words, "you can't be what you can't see."
