A proposal to increase the heavy vehicle toll multiplier in Sydney from 3 to 3.5 times higher than light vehicle tolls has been criticised by the National Road Transport Association (NatRoad). The final report from the 2023 Independent Toll Review has sparked backlash from NatRoad, with CEO Warren Clark stating that the trucking industry's concerns have been disregarded. Clark emphasised that the suggested increase is unwarranted, detrimental to trucking businesses, and undermines the industry's crucial role in the economy and supply chain. House bill against truck speed limiters gains support! Two more co-sponsors have joined the bill in the House of Representatives, making it a total of 34. The bill aims to block mandating speed limiters for trucks. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is expected to announce a final rule in May. However, over 15,000 comments filed on its initial proposals have shown widespread opposition due to safety concerns. Raising highway speeds will only increase the inevitable deaths for people in cars. Raising highway speeds is meant to habituate folks to the reality of living further and further way from the places they live and the places they need for living. Raising highway speeds will only increase the speeds those same people drive on inner urban streets. Making life easier for drivers only means an increase to the daily and weekly anger directed at the thousands of us who live without a car and move around outside of a car. There are too many people driving. If you're mad that traffic is so bad, save your rage for the people in the massive SUVs beside you in traffic or for Doug Ford. Making dangerous and reckless decisions to mythically decrease your travel times only endangers the thousands of us trying to live our lives without cars. Just wait. There's going to be probably millions spent on ripping out important infrastructure and you will still be stuck in traffic. Period. We need way less people driving in the province of Ontario. People who live here deserve the freedom and right to live without the massive financial burden of car ownership. Manhattan is gearing up to implement congestion pricing, a strategy first proposed by Mayor Mike Bloomberg 14 years ago and approved by the state Legislature five years ago. This move aims to reduce traffic congestion and generate revenue for public transportation improvements. Most drivers will face a $15 toll to enter the congestion zone, with discounts for off-peak hours and for those entering through already-tolled crossings. Motorcycles, small box trucks, and big rigs have different rates, while transit and some buses will be exempt. Drivers will be charged once daily, with a system reset at midnight. Taxis and for-hire vehicles will incur a surcharge per trip into the zone. Cameras installed even on outbound routes are to monitor traffic patterns rather than charge exiting vehicles. The tolling system, being developed by TransCore, will use E-ZPass and license plate cameras for toll collection. Certain thoroughfares like the West Side Highway and FDR Drive will be exempt from tolls for through traffic. The tolling infrastructure is about 70% complete, with an expected operational start in mid-June.
