The first Earth Day celebration took place in 1970 after an oil spill in America brought environmental issues to the forefront of public consciousness. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 22 million people across the country came out in support of environmental reform and have ever since. #earthday #earthday1970 #earthday2024 #environment #climatechange #history #environmentalhistory (I do not own the picture)

The Supreme Court's ruling expanding the scope of Articles 14 and 21 to include the "right against the adverse effects of climate change" reflects a significant recognition of environmental protection within constitutional rights. The acknowledgment of the right to a clean environment as integral to the right to life underscores the interconnectedness of environmental health and human well-being. This ruling sets an important precedent for prioritizing environmental conservation and addressing climate change impacts in legal frameworks. #rma #rollmearound #climatewin #supremecourtruling #cleanenvironment

California’s CalEnviroScreen, the environmental justice (EJ) screening tool that identifies disadvantaged communities and offers high-resolution data on environmental impacts across the state, is widely recognized as a pioneering instrument for identifying environmental inequities at a refined granular scale. CalEnviroScreen classifies different types of impacts and exposure levels, and distinguishes vulnerable populations. Decision makers, academics, activists, and different sectoral representatives use CalEnviroScreen to inform policy and highlight changes for programs and protections. Read what happened when the federal government took looked to CalEnviroScreen to develop a national environmental justice screening instrument with a climate focus, in the latest ClimateBrief article by Richard Blaustein. https://gag.gl/qwi5NN #EnvironmentalLaw #CEQA #LandUse #ClimateNews #ClimateLaw #EnvironmentalJustice #CaliforniaLaw

For me, growing up in the Phoenix Metropolitan area, I was fortunate enough to always have reliable electricity, a working refrigerator, dependable transportation, and most importantly, a functioning A/C unit to combat the intense Arizona heat. Unfortunately, many people in our community are not as lucky. A significant number of residents in the Phoenix area face a high energy burden, which is the percentage of income spent on home energy bills. A high energy burden is considered to be above 6%, and a severe energy burden above 10%. Research conducted by the The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) in 2020 found some concerning statistics: - A quarter of low-income households in the Phoenix area have an energy burden above 12%, which is four times higher than the median energy burden. - 21% of Phoenix households (351,448) experience a high energy burden (above 6%), with over half of these households being Black and Hispanic. These numbers are alarming. Hundreds of thousands of families are struggling daily, and the situation is only getting worse as climate change continues to increase our average temperatures. To help alleviate this burden, we can: - Encourage state and local policymakers to set energy affordability and energy burden goals. - Identify highly burdened groups for targeted programs. - Invest in low-income housing retrofits, energy efficiency, and weatherization. - Improve program design, delivery, and evaluation through best practices and community engagement. I am proud to be working with ASU’s Center for Energy and Society in partnership with SDSU’s Community Center for Environmental and Energy Justice. Together, we are helping communities gain access to the tools they need to improve their lives. Our services include identifying grant opportunities, training community champions, educating the community, providing one-on-one consultations with experts, developing local partnerships, and more. We want to hear from you—what does environmental justice mean to you?
