A recent report from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities identifies strategies in career service support that bridge academic preparation and workforce development for student success. Some of the strategies include expanding and improving experiential learning and student employment opportunities. Check out the Inside Higher Ed article here: https://lnkd.in/gbg6AY-h Student employment offers college students invaluable opportunities to build transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and time management, which are essential for career readiness. By gaining real-world experience, students can connect academic learning to professional settings, enhancing their confidence and employability. Additionally, these roles provide a supportive environment for exploring career interests and building networks that prepare students for future success in the workforce. This is our approach at UC San Diego and we are working to increase the number of on-campus opportunities for students with financial need to impact career readiness and student success. #UCSanDiego #CareerDevelopment #StudentEmployment #CareerReadiness #Equity #StudentSuccess

An interesting read in The Wall Street Journal focusing on the rising popularity of higher education programs that more closely integrate real-world job experience and employable skills into students’ curricula. As questions continue to be raised about the value of a higher ed degree, it is increasingly vital that post-secondary programs more closely align education with employment. Our Employability Report research shows that progress is being made, with 57% of recent grads believing their program equipped them with the skills needed for their first professional job, a considerable rise from 41% last year, but there is still work to be done to ensure learners are gaining the skills and competencies they need to enter and grow in the job market. https://lnkd.in/eVKkzJWZ #highered #employability #workforce

Students are off to college campuses this month as a new school year begins and for many students, they're on the job hunt at the same time as they are acclimating to a new schedule, routine, and course load. Or, they're balancing their existing work schedule with a new class schedule. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) shows that 40% of full-time undergraduate students work while in school and 74% of part-time students hold jobs while pursuing a degree. The majority of full-time students who are employed work an average of 20-34 hours a week. Working while in college is the norm for a majority of students. But how do we ensure work is not a barrier to long-term career success? Vote for our SXSW EDU panel on how work-based learning improves economic mobility & expands talent pipelines with Intuit, The University of Texas at El Paso, New America. This session will explore new models of student work and employment that are disrupting the broken economics of working while in college—and creating meaningful work experience for today’s increasingly diverse college students. There are FIVE MORE DAYS left to vote (deadline Aug. 18) - we'd love your support to bring this conversation to Austin in March 2025! #SXSWEDU #workbasedlearning #studentemployment #earlycareertalent
