The UNC System has awarded nearly $29 million to expand nursing education at 12 public universities and North Carolina’s Area Health Education Centers. The grants are part of a groundbreaking effort to address the nursing #workforce shortage in North Carolina. Like many states across the country, North Carolina is coping with an alarming drop in #nursing professionals. The state is projected to have a shortage of up to 18,600 registered nurses over the next decade, a major challenge for health care providers and an aging patient population. Nursing students face rigorous education and licensure requirements, which makes it challenging to quickly expand the nursing workforce. And the Great Resignation, which saw tens of millions of Americans voluntarily quit their jobs in the aftermath of the pandemic, has sharply impacted health care professions and added to the decline of working nurses. The System’s goal is to increase its output of nursing degrees by 50% over the next 10 years. Learn More: https://ow.ly/c2ml50SCyiv #NCHigherEd #UNCSystem #healthcare #nced

Is the answer to this to tell them they should have better customer service? No. The solution is educating them on entering the room with professionalism that leaves no questions to be asked. The family members are politely asking for information. It’s #TACT I NEVER administer or hang a drug without telling the person why it’s ordered, what it does and who ordered it and for what frequency. That’s part of the 5 rights of medication administration. It’s also part of my process for making sure I don’t kill someone. Instead of glorifying med errors we should be teaching professional nursing. If you are reading this thinking; “How do these things not happen at the bedside?” You haven’t been there for sometime and you don’t have any idea how bad nursing has gotten. These kids get off their phones, go grab a med, give it and might not even talk to the patient. They prob don’t even know what the medication does, or why they are giving it. Why? There are no seasoned nurses left teaching the professionalism of nursing. All nursing schools teach now is how to pass a test that doesn’t simulate really life. #professionalism #nursing #education

Did you know that U.S. nursing colleges had to turn away more than 80,000 qualified applicants? 80,000! We have a significant shortage of nursing faculty. Numbers show there are 2,166 faculty vacancies across approximately 2,600 nursing schools. Setting aside budget constraints and related factors, opening faculty to a more diverse cross-section of faculty can help improve admission rates and ensure healthcare at large is prepared for the growing numbers of older adults who need help now and in the future. #NursingEducation #NursingSchool #HealthcareEducation

Everything I learnt about professionalism is learnt from the seasoned nurses. Hospitals should retain good seasoned nurses to ensure that the new generation of nurses are mindful, empathetic and professional. Nursing schools alone cannot teach bedside manners, it should also be learnt from clinical practice environment.

Recent findings from nurse leaders highlight a concerning trend: a significant decline in the school nursing workforce across England. According to a report titled "School Nurse For Every School" commissioned by the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI), the School and Public Health Nursing Association (SAPHNA), and the College of Medicine, the number of school nurses has decreased by approximately 33% between 2009 and 2022. This decline poses challenges to child health and well-being. The report attributes this decline to various factors, including alleged de-prioritisation of child health in national policy, changes to local commissioning, and insufficient data demonstrating the value of school nursing. As advocates for children's health, it's essential to address this issue urgently. The report recommends a major expansion of the school nursing workforce to ensure at least one school nurse per school, an end to the erosion of the school nurse's clinical duties, and better commissioning of school nurse posts to support their vital role in promoting child health. Are you a nurse in schools? Have you observed any challenges or successes in your experience with school nursing? How can we ensure that school nurses have the resources and support they need to fulfil their roles effectively? #NursingRecruitment #HealthcareJobs #NursingCareer #NursingOpportunities #HealthcareRecruitment #NursingCommunity #NurseStaffing

𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 Building upon yesterday's post, I delved into research concerning the shortage of nursing faculty. Below, you'll find a link in the comments to an article discussing this issue across various states in the United States. The article sheds light on states experiencing significant shortages, such as California, Texas, and Florida. Factors contributing to this shortfall include an aging faculty workforce, inadequate salaries, and difficulties in pursuing advanced degrees. It emphasizes the critical need to address this shortage to ensure the ongoing education and training of future nurses. Solving this challenge necessitates collaborative efforts from policymakers, educational institutions, healthcare organizations, and the nursing community at large. Investing in initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining qualified faculty, offering competitive compensation packages, and providing avenues for professional development are vital steps in bridging this gap. As leaders in healthcare, it's our responsibility to advocate for the resources and support needed to address this shortage effectively. By empowering our nursing educators, we empower the next generation of nurses who will play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare. #nursesonlinkedin #nursefaculty #healthcareinnovators #futureofnursing #highcostofeducation

Improving the recruitment, retention, and levels of support for nurses requiring reasonable adjustments for learning in clinical practice settings Within nursing, there are colleagues who have a disability or impairment who require reasonable adjustments. These conditions can include type 1 diabetes, anxiety, dyscalculia, hearing loss and, most recently, Long COVID. However, reasonable adjustments are not always readily available in the clinical areas which can lead to students and registered nurses leaving the profession.
