❗GIVING UPDATE ❗ In June we announced that for every 23/24 personal tax return Lodestar file by 30th November, we'll donate a Girl Pack period pack. These packs include essential supplies like pads, tampons, and wipes, ensuring that everyone has access to what they need, with dignity. As at the end of August, 49 tax returns had been filed, with a further 9 out with clients for signature. Meaning at least 58 packs are due to be donated. We also have more tax returns to prepare so the potential for more packs to be donated. Heading into October, we have a final couple of months to do a big push at getting as many of these over the line as possible by the end of November. October 10 in "DAF Giving Day" -- a first ever -- according to this article. The purpose is to encourage people to donate from their Donor Advised Funds on that day. Now that DAF's are nearly 10 percent of all giving, all non-profits need to get onboard with making it easy for donors with DAFs to make gifts. They were there to speak to the Disability Minister and MPs about how to make life more affordable for families with disabled children. Their message was clear. - Make it easier for carers to work, by providing good school support and childcare for disabled children. - Value unpaid care more highly in the benefits system. - Give every parent carer a benefits check, and train DWP staff better. - End the injustice of families being locked out of their own savings. - Put families with disabled children - who live in some of the poorest housholds in Britain - at the heart of the government's child poverty strategy. My three key asks would be that we: 👉 Identify SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) individuals within the family EARLY in the advice process 👉Understand the implications of savings held in a SEND young person's name, once they turn 18 (it comes down to Access, Risk and Means-tested benefits) 👉Educate and guide families around these issues so that they can make an informed decision about whether to save, how to save and how to avoid the traps. It is often a rude shock for parents when a child turns 18 to find out that they cannot access savings. It's a rude shock because parents are not aware of the implications.
