Something shocked me from our recent research project with Thiscovery: Only 18% of families accessed early help for their child. The important of early intervention is not only well-researched, it’s blindingly obvious, both from a moral and financial standpoint. Prevention over cure, the earlier the better, and all that. So, when we know the importance of the compounding-like effect of supporting people early, why are so few getting help when they need it? Our research picks out 3 key themes on views of the system: 1. Overwhelmed, underfunded and hard to access services 2. Difficulties navigating a complex, fragmented system 3. A lack of trust and confidence in the system The quotes also tell some of the story: “services are too oversubscribed and the waiting lists are abhorrent” (parent) and “the support isn’t very accessible due to referrals and long wait lists” (educator) But its’ not only the (healthcare) system contributing to this. Families are not therapists, schools are not clinics. They often lack the tools, time and support to help as quickly as they would like. Early intervention is now an NHS and government priority. There has never been a more important time to focus on and fund effective, early solutions. But for solutions to get funding, and ultimately succeed, especially in the current market, they need to stand up on their own 2 feet. Engage and retain users, create and show impact, and ultimately, make money and be profitable. It’s no easy feat. But one that we are well on the way to achieving it at Orli. We are delighted to be one of only eight NHS Trusts now getting ready for the second stage of a study in the Alarm Distress Baby Scale (ADBB), funded by The Royal Foundation. The study will run until March 2026. Our involvement will help provide a huge boost for our local region’s Health Visitors and the families they care for. In 2022, the Princess of Wales observed health visitors in Denmark using the tool on a visit she took. In 2023, The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood funded the first phase of study to assess feasibility in the UK, with “overwhelmingly positive results”.
