In my English Language Acquisition class, a fascinating cultural practice often emerges. My #mll students, who come from diverse backgrounds, have collectively adopted the habit of removing their shoes before stepping onto the classroom library carpet. This custom, commonly observed in many Asian cultures, has been seamlessly embraced by even my non-Asian students over the years. It's intriguing to witness how, in a classroom where English is not the first language, customs, and traditions are not just respected but also adapted to with ease. This adaptability highlights the students' openness to new cultures and traditions without compromising their identities. Interestingly, the only time this practice has ever been questioned in my classroom was by a 'native' English speaker, leading us to the crucial question of whether we perpetuate 'language dominance or culture' in our classroom. To shift one's cultural perspective, it is essential to introspect and understand the biases inherent in the dominant culture, analyze the patterns, and then assess their impact on MLL students. #MonoLingualBias #MonoCultureBias #languagelearning #equityineducation #dei

This is a comment I often get after I deliver my keynote on Disrupting the Monolingual Bias: “So what, Lillian, you DON’T want us to invest in my ELLs’ English language development?” Here is my response: Yes, of course I do. I hold 4 degrees in bilingual education. I want our nation’s emergent bilinguals to develop a strong, robust, full-bodied range of English language literacy skills and analytical tools to succeed in whatever professional endeavors they may wish to pursue. And to achieve that goal in the US, a citizen requires confidence and competence in academic English. And yet- ✨ I never want their English language development to come at the cost of their heritage language, culture, or humanity.✨ This is what I’m fighting against day after day- I never want English dominance, or the need to assimilate (e.g. change who you are to fit in) to forsake full biliteracy development. See... there is an invisibility of assimilation forces that operate so powerfully and unapologetically in our educational system. When we can peel back that layer of invisibility, we see the felt pressure to acquire academic English proficiency comes at so many costs. This is what I'm fighting to disrupt 😈. Thoughts? Drop me a line below 👇🏻 #bilingualeducation #teacherempowerment #schools #dei

I am delighted to share that my latest research article, "Understanding Young High-Achieving Chinese L2 Learners' Experiences: A Case Study in an Australian Primary School," has been published in the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, a Q1 journal recommended by the Faculty. This study delves into the experiences of young, high-achieving Chinese second language learners from English-speaking backgrounds, exploring the factors that contribute to their success in learning Chinese in an Australian primary school context. 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gE3a3YJf The study reveals that both internal factors (such as self-confidence, positive attitudes, and interest in L2 learning) and external factors (such as continuous learning of the same L2 curriculum and family support) play crucial roles in these students' success. The findings underscore the importance of understanding these learners' experiences to better support and enhance L2 education for English-speaking students. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my co-author, Dr John Ehrich, and a big thank you to everyone who contributed to this research and to Monash University for providing open access to this article. I hope this research contributes to ongoing discussions and developments in the field of second language acquisition and multilingual education. I look forward to your thoughts and feedback! #Research #Publication #AcademicAchievement #MultilingualEducation #SecondLanguageAcquisition #ChineseL2Learning https://lnkd.in/gc6qmavF

Article | International Mother Language Day 2024- Multilingual education: A pillar of intergenerational learning “The use of learners’ own languages for literacy and learning provides a solid pillar for education, and for transfer of skills and knowledge to additional languages. Learning in one’s first language facilitates understanding and interaction, and further develops critical thinking. It strengthens self-confidence and self-esteem and stimulates active participation.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/dvM-vUkP #InternationalMotherLanguageDay
