Countering narratives. This single study of Bakwa, a small district in the truly remote desert of southwest Afghanistan and interviews with the Taliban district governor and residents adds further to the debunking of these five tropes: · Methamphetamine production in Afghanistan is in the vast majority of cases made from the ephedra plant and NOT over the counter medicines. See: https://lnkd.in/eNNsg33p · Methamphetamine production in Afghanistan, already operating at a vast scale, reduced as a consequence of the Taliban’s ban and has NOT increased due to farmers switching to it when stopping cultivation opium poppy. See: https://lnkd.in/eh4VkQDT · The Taliban gained significantly more income from taxing licit goods than from taxing the drugs economy, which it did NOT own and/or control. See: https://lnkd.in/dg2F58J5 · Bombing both heroin and methamphetamine labs by HQ Resolute Support was wildly ineffective, harming large numbers of civilians, costing tens of millions of USD, and was NOT the success claimed by HQ Resolute Support. See: https://lnkd.in/dzT_k4p · Ground based raids on drugs labs, by internationally supported Afghan law enforcement and military units had little effect on the drugs industry and were NOT the successes variously claimed by ISAF and HQ Resolute Support over the years. Indeed, and counter intuitively for many, the closing of the drugs trade at Abdul Wadood Bazaar in Bakwa is the largest and most effective counter narcotics operation globally to date. Low Boiling Point Naphthas (LBPNs) Group Draft Asessment in consumer products. Petroleum industry site-restricted and industry-restricted LBPNs have previously been assessed. For subgroup 1, the C9–C14 hydrocarbon solvents, chronic neurotoxicity effects on humans and developmental neurotoxicity effects on laboratory animals were identified in inhalation studies. For subgroup 2, the C9 aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, reduced body weights, dose-related mortality in maternal animals, reduced fetal body weights, and delayed ossification in their offspring animals were identified in inhalation studies conducted on laboratory animals. For subgroup 3, the C6–C9 aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents, limited health effects data were available for these substances; therefore, toxicological data from representative UVCBs were used to inform the health effects assessment. A reproductive and developmental toxicity endpoint identified in laboratory animals was considered applicable for short-duration exposures, while long-term exposures were compared to a carcinogenicity study in mice. LBPNs may be used in food packaging materials, incidental additives, and/or products available to consumers and have potential non-petroleum industry releases where they are widely used as solvents. It is easy to take the food that ends up on our table for granted. Working with farmers, I was always impressed by the level of hard work they put in to feeding us despite the challenges of climate change, evolving pest challenges and policies that limited their toolkit for managing the pests that threaten crop yields. To now see these challenges complemented in the UK with farming as a business facing additional tax burdens is heartbreaking. The proposed tax barrier for UK farming businesses is a lose-lose situation. The UK is already a net importer of food and rural economies will only suffer if local farming businesses go bust and leave the UK even more dependent on imports. Increasing the cost of growing food in the UK and as a result, seeing the price of food increase and households come under increasing pressure to feed themselves is also a bad potential outcome. #BritishFarming #FamilyFarmTax #Agriculture #BackBritishFarming
