What a fantastic reflection about the perceived decline of volunteering, the impact collective feelings can have on our society, and the acknowledgment that giving our time/energy/resources to others is also able (and should be allowed!) to be helpful for ourselves. 💜 Here is my favorite snippet: “It’s not considered socially acceptable to tout personal benefits derived from charitable acts. It’d be unusual to hear volunteers say they’re going to a soup kitchen to improve their self-esteem. Perhaps this is because those gains suggest that there are more selfish motivations for behaviors we want to think of primarily as selfless. But wealthy philanthropists don’t seem shy about citing their self-interest, and often say their humanitarian work leaves them with deep feelings of pleasure, optimism, and agency. It struck me as rather sad that those of us who are not billionaires may have convinced ourselves that volunteering or fundraising was mostly a waste of time. When did I become someone who placed such exhausting value on optimizing my time, anyway?“ AND here are some organizations I love being part of that provide me space for all of these opportunities and feelings: Generation SERVE 💙 Volunteering Untapped ATX 💛 Clinton School of Public Service 🤍 Leadership Austin 🩵
Over the last 15 years, ideas crystallized among my generation that real social change would come only from mass protest and collective action. Volunteering, donating, and modifying one’s behavior were, at best, unproductive; at worst, harmful distractions from the change we really need. I wrote an essay for Vox about the costs of these ideas, and why I changed my mind: https://lnkd.in/eDxfxehy

Renewable Energy is the future, unequivocally!! Solar energy has always been more than just an industry to me—it's a powerful solution for a brighter, cleaner, and more sustainable future. As I reflect on the incredible potential of solar energy, I'm reminded of why it resonates deeply with me. 🌍 In India, the future of solar power is incredibly promising. With its abundant sunshine, vast landscapes, and growing need for renewable energy, solar energy offers a pathway to not only reducing our carbon footprint but also achieving energy independence. The shift towards solar is no longer a distant dream—it's happening now. The benefits are clear: Environmental Impact: Solar power is a clean, renewable resource that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, combating climate change and improving air quality. Economic Growth: As the solar industry grows, it creates jobs, stimulates innovation, and attracts investment, driving sustainable economic development. Energy Access: Solar power has the potential to bring electricity to remote, underserved areas, empowering communities and enhancing quality of life. While we are making progress, the true potential of solar in India lies in scaling up investments, improving technology, and creating supportive policies that make solar energy even more accessible to all. With continued dedication and innovation from Prayatna I believe solar power will play a pivotal role in shaping India's future energy landscape. Let's continue working together to harness the sun's energy for a cleaner, brighter tomorrow! 🌞 Manaswani Saxena Bhushan Rintumon K. II’m Susheel Awasti from Ataura Khurd village, and I want to share a story of how something as simple as street lights has completely changed life here. Before we got electricity, power cuts were a constant problem. We never knew when the lights would go out, and without reliable power, even the simplest tasks like cooking or having meals on time became a struggle. But everything changed when Prayatna partnered with Ramboll to install solar-powered street lights in our village. It wasn’t just about lighting up the roads; it was about bringing peace of mind to all of us. These lights work regardless of the electricity supply, lighting up our neighborhood even during power cuts. Whether it’s raining or chilly outside, the lights shine bright through the night and turn off automatically in the morning. Now, we have: 1.Safe spaces for children to play and study in the evenings. 2.A sense of security, as we can clearly see who’s coming and going at night. 3.And the peace of mind that comes with knowing our village is always illuminated. We are forever grateful to Prayatna and Ramboll for their support in making this dream a reality. If you feel inspired by our story and want to help bring this change to more villages, please consider donating. Every contribution helps spread the light and hope to communities in need. #LightingUpLives #CommunityImpact #SolarEnergy #Prayatna #Ramboll #RuralDevelopment #SustainableSolutions #StreetLights #MakeADifference #DonateForChange #HopeInAction #EmpowerCommunities #SafeAndBright #LightTheWay #ChangeMakers #TogetherForProgress #IlluminationForAll #VillageTransformation

The Petition to Restore Vancouver Island Rail just reached Twenty Two Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Two (22222) signatures! https://chng.it/HTPJ25CqPr I started the grass roots petition on July 28th, 2023 to raise Public awareness about the benefits of rail and the very real risk of losing the corridor if the government doesn't fund the track repairs. Remember, The Island Rail Corridor is a community asset owned by the 14 First Nations and 5 Regional Districts who are linked along the line. The Island Corridor Foundation is a non-profit registered charity. This is our last chance to have to have a sustainable, comfortable, accessible, and dignified way to travel on Southern Vancouver Island. I've put together a document called Vancouver Island Rail Project – The Last Opportunity that outlines these benefits and the risks involved with losing it. You can read it online, or download it as a PDF so you can send it to decision makers. https://lnkd.in/d-APhPPD Be sure to answer the BC Government sponsored surveys • https://lnkd.in/gjH6cJNJ (open until Sep 30th) • https://lnkd.in/gVZHPJmp (open until Sep 26th) Pin what you'd like to see next to the railway on a map (CVRD only) https://lnkd.in/gDp-7mbu All Aboard! www.restoreislandrail.com #reconcilation #railway #transit #support #cycling #route #malahat #vancouverisland #britishcolumbia #canada #connection #transportation #disabled #multimodal #cyclists #alternate #railways #support #healthy #communities #climateaction #climate #emergency #health #travel #community #culture

The Reaching People Environmental Fund report for 2023-24 has been published. The report highlights the programme of small, local environmental projects financed by the Reaching People Environmental Fund, in partnership with Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation, a grant-giving funder of local families, individuals, companies and agencies, and the public sector. Working with the Community Foundation, grants were given to small, locally run community groups in various forms (CICs, charities, parish councils, etc.), and the money was available for use anywhere in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. As the sun rises on Earth Day 2024 I have mixed emotions. Over the weekend I dug into #The2024GivingReport from #CanadaHelps. Thank you for this critical tool. As a fundraiser for #EvergreenCanada, an environmental charity focused on transforming public places in our cities for the health of people and our planet, there's lots to be frustrated and anxious about, such as this alarming statistic: "32 percent of Canadians say climate change or protecting our environment is a top cause for them, and almost half (48 percent) of Canadians express anxiety about climate change on at least somewhat of a regular basis....Yet, only 1.5 percent of donations through CanadaHelps are made to environmental charities." But the report also rightly points to the power of social connection and hope to galvanize giving to environmental causes, and, in fact, to all charities. Rather than stoking fear and alarm all the time and pointing fingers at each other, let's realize we need to come together. We need each other to solve the big, thorny problems of our day. And the magic is when we are truly connected. At Evergreen, we are working to bring people together in real life in green public spaces that can be joyful and restorative, peaceful and vibrant. Improving public spaces can have profound impact on social, mental, physical, and environmental health. This Earth Day consider reading this report and thinking about the ways you can bring people together, and help us create better public places. We are turning our cities from grey to green. Won't you come join us? I look forward to meeting you there! https://lnkd.in/g4jt3aXU
