Did you know that 80% of what we learn is visual? Clear vision is important for a child’s success—not just in academics, but in all aspects of life, including their social and emotional well-being. Through the Alcon Children's Vision Program, alongside our partners, we conduct vision screenings for pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students to identify those who need more comprehensive eye exams, glasses, or treatment. Seeing a child light up the first time they wear their new glasses is an unforgettable experience. 👁️ Celebrating Children's Vision Month! 🎉 At SereneAid, we’re dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of children's eye health. October is Children's Vision Month, a perfect time to highlight how essential good vision is for learning and development.  🌟 Did You Know? - In Canada, 1 in 5 children has an undiagnosed vision problem. Early detection is crucial! - Statistics: Vision problems can impact academic performance, social skills, and overall development. About 80% of what a child learns in their early years is through their eyes! - The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months, and then at least once before starting school. 🩺 What Can You Do? - Schedule regular eye exams for your child to ensure they can see the world clearly. - Look out for signs of vision problems, such as squinting, sitting too close to the TV, or difficulty with reading. I recently had the privilege of attending the Australian Stuttering Conference 2024, which brought together experts, researchers and practitioners in the field of stuttering. It was an inspiring day filled with insights and opportunities to connect with colleagues. Key takeaways from the conference: 🌟 A discussion on the role and goals of stuttering therapists in the era of neurodiversity highlighted the importance of affirming principles in therapy and ways to implement them. 🌟 Insights were shared on the operationalisation of stuttering and innovative treatment approaches, including the Oslo Stuttering Treatment. 🌟 Research on the variability of stuttering provided useful information for tailoring discussions and interventions with clients. 🌟 An update on the genetics of stuttering emphasised the importance of understanding this aspect to better support clients and their families. 🌟 Different strategies for supporting school-aged children who stutter were explored, emphasising the importance of flexible and tailored approaches. 🌟 The potential role of technology in assessment and treatment was discussed, showcasing how it can improve access to care and reduce financial barriers. Thank you to Elaina Kefalianos who organised and facilitated this fantastic event! It was a wonderful opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect with other speech pathologists dedicated to supporting individuals who stutter.

I am excited to share another story I wrote for MTSU News! Two Middle Tennessee State University faculty members in the Department of Health and Human Performance have been recognized with grants to help continue funding their efforts to enhance in- and out-of-classroom opportunities for their students. Kathryn Blankenship and Karen Davis, associate professors in the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, or SLPA, program, run the SLPA Student Ambassador Program, which gives SLPA majors the opportunity to attend recruiting events and serve as tutors and mentors for their peers in beginning SLPA courses. This month marks the one-year anniversary of the Bone-Anchored Prosthetics Society! In just one year, this pioneering society has become a thriving community dedicated to advancing the clinical care of individuals with bone-anchored prostheses through research, education, and collaboration. Some accomplishments: ✅ Expanded from 20 to 50 members ✅ Hosted the first-ever Academy Unconference, followed by the creation of a Journal of Proceedings and webinar ✅ Published article in the O&P Edge ✅ Shared insights on the Academy’s Clinical Care Insiders Podcast The Bone-Anchored Prosthetics Society is one of ten Academy Scientific Societies, each committed to advancing a specific area within O&P.
