“A Lighthouse, Not a Searchlight” Yesterday, my incredible team surprised me with this thoughtful gift. The words etched on it hit me hard: “A leader is not a searchlight, always shining bright, but a lighthouse, guiding others through treacherous waters.” And if that wasn’t enough, they even included a wave in the globe—a subtle nod to my love of the water. Whether I’m swimming, competing, or simply finding peace near it, the water has always been a grounding force in my life. Seeing that reflected in this gift made it all the more meaningful. Now, I’m not one to get overly emotional—anyone who knows me knows I haven’t shed a tear in over a decade—but this came close. Not because of the gift itself, but because of what it represents: a team that knows me, trusts me, and works tirelessly alongside me. A leader is only as strong as the people they lead, and I’m lucky to have the absolute best. One topic that's becoming increasingly relevant is understanding and supporting Generation Z as they enter the workforce. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐆𝐞𝐧-𝐙 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Generation Z, those born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s, is facing unique challenges. Jonathan Haidt's recent analysis highlights how the rapid rise of smartphones and social media has fundamentally altered their developmental experiences. Increased rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness are some of the consequences, influencing not only their personal lives but also their professional journeys. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐄𝐫𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐭𝐬 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 The transition from flip phones to smartphones and the shift to online social lives have deprived this generation of essential developmental milestones such as unsupervised play and in-person interactions. This digitalization has led to a generation that's more risk-averse and less ambitious, potentially hindering innovation and entrepreneurship. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐃𝐨? As Gen-Z is projected to make up about 27% of the workforce by 2025, it's crucial for organizations to adapt.
