Brandon shows up in my feed a lot. I must interact regularly with his posts. He is also a recruiter. Like him, recruiting is also my calling. And I see people. This post today struck those cords, but the big one was this sentence: At the end of the day, our role in the world of work is incredibly important for the candidates who trust us as they make one of the most important decisions they have in their life…where they go to work. I want my candidates to trust me. Don't get me wrong, I want to do great work for the organization who is paying me - but til I retire I will always believe that as a recruiter I am facilitating a relationship that has a significant impact on individuals and their family's lives. Some of my candidate tenets: I will always be honest with you. I will get you ALL the information you need in order to make a good decision for you - your life - ya family. I will be transparent. Employment is a 2 way relationship. I will not treat it any differently. It's gotta work both ways or both sides lose. If I don't feel comfortable working for a company - how can I tell you - "Hey you should work here!"? I have some longer stints in my background - and some shorter stints. (there may even be a couple of companies that I won't put on my resume') YEP true. If you ask for feedback, I will do my best to offer it. Sometimes I don't know - it may just be that the hiring manager is being stupid. (it happens - they aren't perfect) I believe you 'talk to people', have a conversation. You learn shit - about what they may have done that is similar or someone they worked with who is the perfect match. Rarely do you find a candidate that is a perfect match for a posted role. You can only tell so much about a candidate from a profile or resume'. I love what I do. And I consider it a privilege to get to know people through the recruiting process. You should know that there are recruiters out there that really care about you as a candidate. For many of us, it’s not just a numbers game. My hope for 2025 is that recruiters work harder to be human. I am looking forward to some AI technology giving me more time to nurture relationships.
Recruiting is not a respected profession. But it’s my calling. As I appraoch my tenth year in recruiting I’m grateful for the life it has given me. And for the recruiters out there who have passed the torch along the way. You see, I don’t take recruiting lightly. At the end of the day, our role in the world of work is incredibly important for the candidates who trust us as they make one of the most important decisions they have in their life…where they go to work. Opportunities I’ve been afforded because of recruiting are with publicly traded, private equity, tier 1 venture capital companies, and supporting bootstrapped founders in crucible stages of building products. To me it doesn’t matter if I’m hiring a grocery clerk or a VP of Engineering. I see people. At the end of the day, I’m just a dude from a tiny village in Upstate New York without any remarkable skills, training, or qualifications. But I will check my privilege by expressing gratitude to the people who have allowed me to meet opportunity with preparation and hard work, and who saw something in me that I didn’t know I had. At the end of the day, there are a million ways to make a living. And I’m happy that recruiting is mine.

What I will continue to do in 2025 🤩 Creating a stronger team. It’s essential for growth, BUT here’s a lesson I’ve learned the hard way: If a candidate doesn’t have prior industry experience, don’t hire them. 🔍 Sometimes, you meet someone who seems like the perfect fit: • They tick all the boxes ✅ • They communicate well 🗣️ • They seem knowledgeable about the role 🤓 You think, “This person could be great.” But here’s the truth: Hiring is always a risk—and hiring someone without industry experience? That’s an even bigger gamble. In industries like food 🍽️, where operations are so unique, an outsider often has to learn everything from scratch. This means: ⏳ Investing significant time and effort into teaching them the ins and outs. So ask yourself: Do you really want to take that risk? 👉 What’s your take on hiring? Have you faced similar challenges?

After being in the same place for so long you forgot what it’s like to be “the newbie”…. Week 1 in my new role at Base Materials completed ✔️ Positive reflections My first day nerves didn’t last long ✔️ The team here are friendly, supportive and have a sense of humour ✔️ The onboarding process was planned well in advance, and aligned with my role perfectly✔️ The business is growing and the potential here is huge✔️ People are valued and developed✔️ So what’s not so perfect????? My brain aches from all the new information 🤯🤣. I have that stunned, vacant look about me. I was fully prepared for this though. There are improvements to be made but that’s recognised, and one of the reasons we’re taking on some new key roles. The point of me telling everyone this????….. a. It’s never too late to make a change. Change is good, fear of the unknown is normal. b. There are opportunities here for people that want to, and are able to make a difference (however big or small). Matthew Ely is our internal recruiter (another new role). Reach out to him!! Will I be going in for week 2 ?✔️👍 😊 Will I still have that vacant, startled look - probably, but I know I’ve got the support I need. #change #worklifebalance #manufacturing #hiring #recruiting
