Biodiversity is incredibly important, and humans are a part of our Earth’s biodiversity. Humans are also the cause of biodiversity loss. This episode discusses the ways in which a utility can both protect biodiversity while also maintaining critical infrastructure that allows us to live rich, full lives. Learn how Eversource Energy maintains corridors and tracks the rich biodiversity across their sites from Lynn Towill, a sustainability professional, and Peter DeFusco, an environmental specialist, both with Eversource. 🏗️Did you know that 50% of global resource extraction is due to the built environment? 🧱That makes it the most material-intensive sector in the world. We need to move away from destructive and extractive practices in the built environment, building upon emerging concepts such as being nature-positive and regenerative. Crucially, we need to form a deeper understanding as an industry of what this means in practice and the role of embodied ecological impacts (EEI) in facilitating this. In our latest blog, our Head of Nature, Kai Liebetanz, discusses how assessing our impacts on nature and biodiversity holistically means getting familiar with the concept of embodied ecological impacts. 📚Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/e-fRvqbM Explore our Embodied Ecological Impacts knowledge hub here: https://lnkd.in/eN5EtGRz #EmbodiedEcologicalImpacts #ResourceUse #MaterialExtraction

💧🌱🦋Science-based targets (SBTs) for nature complement the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) yet extend the scope to the whole earth system to align with the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework. In our most recent blog, EcoAct experts Stephanie Canas, Charlie Cooper (MSc), and Mélodie BEGON look at why businesses should set SBTs for nature and break down the 5-step process: 1. Assess 2. Interpret & Prioritize 3. Measure, Set, & Disclose 4. Act 5. One of these question assessed a subset of nine industry groups on what kinds of actions have taken to mitigate their impacts and dependencies on nature, including biodiversity and ecosystem services. The three align with the benefits NbS can create: 1) Regenerate refers to actions taken to increase ecological productivity in relation to nature’s contribution to people, including nature-based carbon storage. 2)Restoration measures aim to return an area to the original ecosystem that was present before impacts, including supporting species recovery or the ecological restoration of specific sites. 3) Transform refers to actions that a company takes in order to address the fundamental drivers of nature loss, such as new partnerships across supply chains and sectors or investment in the landscapes and seascapes where they operate. Today, I had the privilege to support* the running of the third edition of the #IUCNLeadersForum which has the aim of formulating actions for a more liveable planet for nature and people. Interesting to see conversations among corporates, Indigenous peoples’ representatives, and Ministers about anticipating the hurdles that come with decarbonization transition paths, namely e.g. the impacts that new renewable plants may have on local communities & fauna / flora conservation. Cool innovative projetcs were also presented, like paper-based batteries 💡 How to scale solutions / how to speed up / how to mainstream / how to finance R&D remain the key buzz questions 🐝 What does a “just transition” look like is just in the making. World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is the United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Each year, it has a specific theme that focuses on a particularly pressing environmental issue. Here's a summary of some of the recent themes: 2024 Theme: "Ecosystem Restoration" The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is "Ecosystem Restoration." This theme emphasizes the urgent need to revive and restore our natural ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed. Ecosystem restoration involves reforestation, greening cities, cleaning up rivers and coasts, and adopting sustainable agricultural practices. The focus is on preventing, halting, and reversing the damage caused by human activities, with the goal of bringing nature back into our lives and enhancing biodiversity.
