It’s been an exciting two weeks representing Modern Synthesis at SynBioBeta in San Jose and the Rethinking Materials summit in London. So grateful to have shared the stage with such a great group of people exploring the future of our material world from all angles - from innovation and investment to synthetic biology and recycling infrastructure. Driving scale and impact were top of mind, and there are many factors at play: Aesthetic matters: New materials need to resonate with consumers not just functionally, but also emotionally. The look and feel of these materials are crucial in gaining acceptance. Performance standards: It’s not enough for these materials to be sustainable; they must also meet or exceed the performance benchmarks set by traditional synthetics. Investment: To bring these materials to market at scale, significant investment is required, with a longer-term perspective that doesn’t measure material innovation against the same yardstick as software. Despite the challenges, I’ve returned feeling optimistic, energised by the tangible progress of innovation in the last year, enthusiastic brand collaborators, and a new wave of purpose-aligned investors eager to usher in a rising tide of better materials. A #BIOCIRCULAR Future for Leather How many times have you wanted to use a good quality material like #leather but hesitated because you were unsure if it could be considered #sustainable? 🙄 Looking at the different types of #tanning and understanding what is a good fit for you can be challenging. You may have heard that chrome tanning is bad, yet it represents most of the leather you see on the market. However, chrome-free leather isn't always more sustainable as it depends how is made and if it's made with Glutaraldehiyde. ☠ The most important thing to consider is that leather is a #natural material, a by-product of the meat industry, with technical specifications that no other material has matched so far. This means that if we tan leather in the right way, we can contribute to a bio-circular future by returning a natural product to the #environment. For instance the leather waste from #shoes factories could be transformed into #Organic fertiliser for agricultural use. We will explore this topic together with Alessandra Taccon from one of the world's largest producers of tannins, Silvateam s.p.a., and with Gustavo Adrián Defeo, a leading expert in bio-circularity and founder of CTC Ars Tinctoria srl. Early industry players set their sights on creating next-gen leather. In fact, nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of material innovation companies are focused on alternative leathers. But what about the other animal materials? Per the Material Innovation Initiative (MII), the next-gen market share for these fibers is less than one percent—meaning material innovators have a substantial opportunity on their hands.

🎉 HOPE - 100 months as a "legal alien" in the textile industry (Part 1/5) 🎉 I was originally assigned to join Sympatex for just 100 days... And yet here I am, 100 MONTHS later. But while currently in the global political environment everything seems to shift from responsibility to egomania, there was unstoppable progress in the right direction in the Textile Industry - especially regarding banning “#ForeverChemicals”, taking responsibility for #ClimateImpact, and a clear shift towards #Circularity. At Sympatex, we didn't wait for those changes to come to us. Eight years ago, we rolled up our sleeves because we saw that the old ways couldn't last. The world of tomorrow demands responsibility and clinging to outdated models was no longer an option. We made a promise to act, and our mission became clear: Closing the textile loop by 2030. Together. Today, 100 months later, I’m proud to say the groundwork is done – not only in-house, but also in our industrial “arena”: With the ESPR formally released this year, the EU will soon make responsible, sustainable standards the only way to do business in Europe – our "License to Operate" - and, thankfully, there’s no turning back and no way around. Therefore, the entire #TextileIndustry needs to rapidly join forces to be ready for this new future reality - not tomorrow, but today. How can we repurpose and add value to waste materials? In the CITEX project "Innovative Fiber Blends and Yarn Spinning Techniques," we tested a concept using Swedish wool residues and recycled cotton. These wool residues were rich in vegetable matter, and short fibres are typically unusable in conventional spinning. So, what did we do? We innovated! We created a needle-punched nonwoven, which we cut into tape-like twistless yarn. The yarn could then be used for rug manufacturing.   The benefits? A locally produced product made from recycled materials. ♻️ The project is funded by BioInnovation and the project partners are: Albany International Corp., FOV FABRICS AB, Houdini Sportswear, ICA Gruppen, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Pure Waste, Rester, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Stadium, The Swedish School of Textiles - University of Borås, TreeToTextile, TRIKÅBY AB, Ullkontoret.
